  • Geschichtsunterricht für Kaiser Sigismund

    Peter Schreiner•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2026

In 1434, the monk Isidor, later Metropolitan of Kiev and since 1439 also cardinal of the Roman Church, headed a Byzantine delegation to the Council of Basel. For this purpose, he also wrote a speech on Emperor Sigismund, whom he met in Ulm on June 14, 1434. In this speech, he highlights the qualities that make him the leader of the European powers. He refers to his role in Hungarian history, in church politics and sees in him the only personality…

    Peter Schreiner•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2025

Since many details in the relations between Byzantium and Hungary have already been covered in research, this article attempts to point out the transnational connections between the two states. Hungary had been a constant factor of Byzantine policy in the Balkans since it had become a stately consolidated Christian kingdom around 1000. This was of particular importance after the victory over Bulgaria in 1018 made the Byzantine Empire a territoria…

  • The Byzantine roots of southeastern Europe

    Open Access•Peter Schreiner•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2023

Southeastern Europe is a divided region with regards to its Byzantine roots, Byzantine legacy and Byzantine present. Politically and militarily, Byzantium never managed to reestablish the old Roman frontiers in the Balkans. However, it was decisively involved in the economic rise of this region, which in turn benefited the Empire. Byzantium became a model for peoples and states due to its overall political power, cultural legacy, and especially t…

  • L’empereur d’orient et l’empereur d’occident à Buda (1424)

    Peter Schreiner•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2023

The Byzantine emperors had never left their country until the second half of the 14th century, when John V Palaiologos undertook, with two of his sons, a journey to the court of Louis I to seek military aid against the Turks. Despite the failure of this first mission, from then on, contacts with the kings of Hungary determined Byzantine policy. They came to a head when John V’s grandson, John VIII, who replaced his father Manuel II, unable to gov…

  • Skylitzēs, Iōannēs

    Open Access•Peter Schreiner, Peter R Schreiner•CHAPTER•Kindlers Literatur Lexikon (KLL)•2020

    Open Access•Peter Schreiner, Peter R Schreiner•CHAPTER•Kindlers Literatur Lexikon (KLL)•2020

  • Joy, Sorrow, Wrath

    Open Access•Peter Schreiner•ARTICLE•

The people’s emotions make up a phenomenon not measurable in objective way. This paper’s author has confirmed this conclusion by the cases of accounts on treasons and violent deaths of the emperors as described by several Byzantine historians. This paper addresses the accounts of Theophylaktes Symokattes on the death of Maurice, Michael Psellos and John Zonaras on the revolt against Michael V, and Niketas Choniates on the death of emperor Androni…

  • Byzantium Today

    Open Access•Peter Schreiner•ARTICLE•

The author of the article considers the perception of Byzantium, the assessment of its role and place in world history by the example of the analysis of historical and cultural studies, fiction and poetry, as well as assesses the contribution of Russian Byzantine studies in the formation of modern ideas about Byzantium. Historical research has long sought to find a fair place in the history of Byzantium, but the opinion of the superiority of the …

  • Authorship and Authority in the Sanskrit Literary Tradition of the Swaminarayana Movement

    Jaydev A Jani, Peter Schreiner•ARTICLE•Asiatische Studien – Études…•2016

This paper presents what the Satsaṅgijīvanam, a text by Śatānanda-Muni about the life and teachings of Sahajānanda, the founder of the Swaminarayana Movement, in two different passages reports about the authorship of the Śikṣāpatrī. It would appear that Swaminarayana (the name by which the founder came to be known) wrote the Śikṣāpatrī well before Śatānanda produced the version included in the Satsaṅgijīvanam. What the Satsaṅgijīvanam tells us ab…
