A comprehensive workflow for compositional data analysis in archaeometry, with code in R
Agta hunter–gatherer oral microbiomes are shaped by contact network structure
Here we investigate the effects of extensive sociality and mobility on the oral microbiome of 138 Agta hunter–gatherers from the Philippines. Our comparisons of microbiome composition showed that the Agta are more similar to Central African BaYaka hunter–gatherers than to neighbouring farmers. We also defined the Agta social microbiome as a set of 137 oral bacteria (only 7% of 1980 amplicon sequence variants) significantly influenced by social co…
The making of the oral microbiome in Agta hunter–gatherers
Ecological and genetic factors have influenced the composition of the human microbiome during our evolutionary history. We analysed the oral microbiota of the Agta, a hunter–gatherer population where some members have adopted an agricultural diet. We show that age is the strongest factor modulating the microbiome, probably through immunosenescence since we identified an increase in the number of species classified as pathogens with age. We also c…

Making the most of expert knowledge to analyse archaeological data
Chemical compositional data sets of archaeological artefacts are often analysed using standard statistical procedures. Adopting a different approach, we examine the major element oxides found in Parthian and Sasanian glazed pottery by identifying statistically important ratios of oxides in conjunction with the expert knowledge of the archaeological scientist during, rather than after, the identification process. This results in meaningful ratios,…

Carme-N — Correspondence Analysis and Related Methods Network Carme 2007
Subset Correspondence Analysis
This study shows how correspondence analysis may be applied to a subset of response categories from a questionnaire survey (e.g., the subset of undecided responses or the subset of responses for a particular category across several questions). The idea is to maintain the original relative frequencies of the categories and not reexpress them relative to totals within the subset, as would normally be done in a regular correspondence analysis of the…

Modelling Information Search Behaviour of Car Purchasers
The objective in the study was to establish whether there was any relationship between certain information usage categories and four selected predictor variables namely (1) new or used car purchase, (2) other-than-white or white buyer, (3) male or female, and (4) first-time buyer or experienced buyer. Certain external sources of information (non-market dominated and market dominated) which are available to the buyer of a car and the development o…
