    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1957•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In a volume dedicated to Sir Ralph Turner, it can scarcely be inappropriate to devote an essay to a text which bears every sign of being the first Christian adaptation of that legend of the Buddha which, migrating from the cultural environment of the Lalita-vistara and the Buddha-carita, finally evolved into the story of the Christian worthies Barlaam and Ioasaph.Since the German Turfan expeditions of half a century ago, it has become increasingl…

    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1957

In 1955, the appearance in the Patrologia Orientalis of the Old Georgian version of St. Luke's Gospel brought to a successful conclusion the project initiated some thirty years ago by the late Professor Robert P. Blake of Harvard University, namely the critical editing of the famous Adysh (or Adishi) Gospel manuscript, copied at Shatberd in Tao-Klarjet'i in A.D. 897, and later removed thence to be preserved in a remote village in highland Svanet'…

    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1956•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Prominent among the authors of the ‘Silver Age’ or Renaissance of Georgian literature was Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani (1658–1726). A scion of one of the leading K‘art‘lian princely families, Sulkhan Orbeliani was related on his father's side to the Mukhranian reigning dynasty of Eastern Georgia; his mother, T‘amar, was the daughter of the feudal magnate Zaal, Erist‘avi or Duke of the Aragvi. On becoming a monk in later life Sulkhan replaced his Christ…

IN the literary world of medieval Christendom, few works rival the popularity of the edifying tale of Barlaam and Ioasaph. As is well known, the work purports to relate the conversion of the Indians by the Christian sage and ascetic Barlaam. In reality, it is a Christianized version of episodes from the life of Buddha. In its Western form, it consists of a set of apologues or fables woven into a narrative framework, and interspersed with quotatio…

  • Georgia In The Reign Of Giorgi The Brilliant

    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1955•Cited by: 1

THE political career of King Giorgi V of Georgia, commonly known as Giorgi Brdsqinvale or George the Brilliant, spans an eventful period in the history of the Near East. When Giorgi first came to the throne in 1299, the Il-Khan dynasty of Persia under the able Ghazan Mahmud Khan was at the summit of its power. Ghazan's empire with its vassal states stretched from India to the Mediterranean and Black Seas. He controlled most of Anatolia, including…

    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1952•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Contemporaryaccounts of the events which led up to the Afghan conquest of Persia in 1722 ascribe some importance to the role played by the Georgians in this catastrophe. The well-known narrative of Jonas Hanway and reports of Catholic missionaries, European travellers, and Consular agents, together with the published documents from Russian archives, indicate that the deterioration of relations between the Shah and the King of K'art'li was among t…

  • Peter the Iberian and his Biographers

    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1951•Cited by: 1

The career and personality of Peter the Iberian, bishop of Mayuma, near Gaza, present exceptional interest for the history both of the Monophysite movement of the fifth century and of the Georgian Church. At the same time, the hagiographical writings recording his life raise documentary problems of a complex nature

  • Count Todtleben's Expedition to Georgia 1769-1771 according to a French eyewitness

    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1951

The reign of Erekle II over the united kingdoms of Kakhet'i and K'art'li, which lasted from 1762 until 1798, may be regarded as the swan-song of the Georgian monarchy. Through the king's personal ability and the enfeebled state of Persia, Georgia was enabled to enjoy a period of somewhat precarious political independence before being absorbed by Russia as soon as Erekle's death removed the only force capable of maintaining any semblance of Georgi…

  • Georgian Relations with France during the reign of Wakhtang VI (1711–24)

    Open Access•D M Lang•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•1950•Cited by: 2

Research undertaken recently at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has resulted in the discovery of a number of fresh documents which throw light on the relations between Georgia and France in the early eighteenth century, and in particular on the journey to Versailles of Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani. The objects of this mission were to secure French intervention in favour of King Wakhtang VI of K'art'li, since 1712 detained by the Persian Shah at …
