The decline of a credit instrument that reigned supreme
This article examines the reasons for the widespread use of sea loans in financing Spain’s transatlantic commerce before the 1780s, and for their subsequent decline. Although never in the hands of a company with monopoly rights, Spain’s colonial trade was heavily regulated before 1778. The system reduced market risk and unpredictability by operating through a single Spanish port, keeping the colonies undersupplied, and lowering the frequency of t…
An Economic History of the Iberian Peninsula, 700–2000
This is a comprehensive long-run history of economic and political change in the Iberian Peninsula. Beginning with the development of the old medieval kingdoms, it goes on to explore two countries, Portugal and Spain, which during the early modern period possessed vast empires and played an essential role in the global economic and political developments. It traces how and why both countries began to fall behind during the first stages of industr…
Trade and the Colonial Economies, 1500–1828
Economic historians have placed commercialization at the centre of Europe’s early modern capitalism, emphasizing the importance of domestic and international trade, shipbuilding and concomitant manufactures, the financial sector, and urbanization. As the Iberian polities extended geographically to Africa, Asia and the Americas during the early modern period, trade, whether domestic, international or colonial, had a critical effect upon economic d…
The fiscal transformation of the Spanish Carrera de Indias in the 17 th century
This article examines the fiscal transformation of Spain's trade with Spanish America during the 17 th century. It analyses the taxation of trade combined with the evolution of the Hispanic Monarchy's long-term domestic debt. To this end, the author looks at the almojarifazgo de Indias (main customs duty), its juro (annuity) obligations and the evolution of the transatlantic trade. He argues that the fall in customs revenue and the increasing non…
An Atlantic Slave Trade Stretching from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and Beyond
The study of the trans-Atlantic slave trade is becoming increasingly sophisticated, diverse, and international. Challenging prevailing stereotypes about the dominance of northern European business interests, García Montón’s study shows the persistent vigor of Genoa’s merchant community in this examination of the asiento system that emerged in the mid-seventeenth century and continued into the mid-eighteenth century. Along the way, he also illumin…
Merchant Cultures
The 14 chapters of this book fruitfully explore different aspects and features of early modern merchant cultures around the globe, with particular emphasis on cross-cultural encounters and exchanges. The authors come from several universities and research institutions (eleven European, two Indian, and one American). Right at the start, the editors define merchant culture as “ways of doing, thinking and interacting related to buying and selling, s…

Transatlantic Networks and Merchant Guild Rivalry in Colonial Trade with Peru, 1729 - 1780
This article takes a fresh look at merchant networks that linked Spain and colonial Peru in the central decades of the eighteenth century. Spain's trade with its American colonies has been studied primarily in the light of mercantilistic policies design to revive the exchanges. Much attention has been paid to the fierce rivalry between the merchant guilds of both sides of the Atlantic (those of Cádiz, Mexico City, and Lima), and their efforts to …
Basque Ship Captains as Mariners and Traders in the Eighteenth Century
This study analyses the close relationship between the creation of trading networks within Spanish colonial trade in the 18th century, and the moment in which the merchants of Cadiz chose to get married and start a family. Following a work of Paloma Fernández Pérez, in which she shows that in the first half of that century Cadiz merchants gave priority to the formation of family networks in order to enter the colonial trade, whereas after the 175…
