  • In and Out of Time (Cervantes, Dostoevsky, Borges)

    Peter G Earle•ARTICLE•Hispanic Review•2003•Cited by: 1

IN the Western tradition of storytelling, time is as much a mystery as a revelation. Willingly or not, author and reader confront it. It is the writer's, the artist's, and the musician's indispensable abstraction, a recurrent measurement or focal point in their imagination. And the imagination in its basic, creative function manipulates, expands, or (in the Eastern tradition) eliminates time at will. In that enigmatic process human drives that ar…

  • The Secret of Borges. A Psychoanalytic Inquiry into His Work

Peter G Earle, Julio Woscoboinik et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Review•2000

Secret of Borges. A Psychoanalytic Inquiry into His Work. By Julio Woscoboinik. Trans. Dora Carlisky Pozzi. Lanham, MD: UP of America, 1998. xi + 229 pages. Some irony is to be found in this basically Freudian interpretation of Borges, who considered the great psychiatrist to be kind of madman ... laboring over a sexual (v. Richard Burgin, Conversations with Jorge Luis Borges, 125). Irony-if Woscoboinik is right-in the sense that the author of so…

It will be seen that this development coincided with and was causally connected with the rise of other ports as widely dispersed as London, Antwerp, Ragusa and Constantinople. \nDuring this period Ancona was transformed fr…

Neither Fernando de Rojas nor Proaza nor anyone else who possibly had a hand in the Celestina's composition is known to have suggested that it be performed as a play. The idea would have seemed as preposterous in 1500 as in modem times. It was then inconceivable-as it is to

    Peter G Earle•ARTICLE•Hispanic Review•1964

THE emphasis which Unamuno repeatedly placed on romantic, l spiritual anxiety and on the enigmatic notion of intrahistoria has tended to obscure his permanent interest in the theme of history itself. Intrahistoria, antihistoria, sotohistoria, metahistoria: precisely because of his stylistic inclination to emphasis (a trait which reminds us of his enthusiasm for other writers of the emphatic school-Carlyle, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard), it might app…

  • Prophet in the Wilderness: The Works of Ezequiel Martínez Estrada

    Peter G Earle•BOOK•Prophet in the Wilderness•1971

A universal test of great writers is the quality of their response to the human dilemma. Prophet in the Wilderness traces the development of that response in the works of the Argentine writer Ezequiel Martínez Estrada, from the first ambitious poems to its definitive expression in the essays and short stories. His theme is progressive disillusionment, in history and in personal experience, both of which are interpreted in his work as accumulation…
