Vice-based accounts of moral evil
In this paper, I highlight three objections to vice-based accounts of moral evil: (1) the worry that vice-based accounts of evil are explanatorily inadequate; (2) the worry that even extreme vice is not sufficient for evil; and (3) the worry that not all vices are inversions of virtue (and so vice-based accounts will struggle to explain the “mirror thesis”). I argue that it is possible to respond to these objections by developing a vice-based acc…
Unity of the intellectual virtues
The idea that moral virtues form some sort of “unity” has received considerable attention from virtue theorists. In this paper, I argue that the possibility of unity among intellectual virtues has been wrongly overlooked. My approach has two main components. First, I work to distinguish the variety of different views that are available under the description of a unity thesis. I suggest that these views can be categorised depending on whether they…
The Virtue of Aesthetic Courage
Theorists have recently been exploring the prospects for a virtue-centred approach to aesthetics. Virtue aesthetics encourages a re-focusing of philosophical attention onto the aesthetic character traits of agents, in the same way that virtue ethics and virtue epistemology have encouraged us to focus on moral and intellectual traits. In this paper, I aim to contribute to the development of virtue aesthetics by discussing aesthetic courage, the ae…
Virtue
Heather Battaly has provided an admirably clear and engaging introduction to virtue theory. Throughout Virtue, Battaly helpfully summarizes the work of key theorists, often using examples from popular culture in order to explain important ideas. There are also positive proposals on how best to think about issues such as the connection between virtue and knowledge, the connection between virtue and living well, and on how we might educate for inte…

Earthquakes in Persia
Persia is as a whole less liable than Europe, but more than most Asiatic countries, to catastrophic earthquakes, but the references thereto in printed literature are few and peculiarly difficult to discover as few, if any, indexes to books on Persia so much as mention the word.Watson (p. 190) remarks that earthquakes are " very frequent in most parts of Persia ". Allemagne (i. 3) classes them, with plagues and famines, as Acts of God to which the…

History of the Mission of the Fathers of the Society of Jesus in China and Other Kingdoms of the East
In a previous number of the Bulletin, I submitted a translation of a little known work describing the history of the Mission of the Society of Jesus in Persia. I now propose to supplement this history by giving a short abstract, and translation of a part, of an interesting work which appeared in 1681, bearing on the earlier and wider activities of the Society in the East, including Persia
