Kitāb Sulaym ibn Qaysrevisited
Kitāb Sulaymis possibly the earliest Shīʿī work in existence and analysis of its constituent reports could shed light on aspects of early Shīʿī thought and doctrine. This paper examines one of its reports on the subject ofikhtilāfin Propheticḥadīthbetween the Shīʿa and their opponents, and the related subjects of the status of the Companions of the Prophet and the Prophet's transmission of his knowledge to ʿAlī. It suggests dates and contexts for…
Al-Ma'mūn's alleged apocalyptic beliefs
The designation by the caliph al-Ma'mūn of the 'Alid imām 'Alī al-Riọā as his successor was an extraordinary event by the standards of the time. The imam's knowledge and the Quran according to al-Fadl b. Shādhān al-Nīsābūrī (d. 260 A.H. /874 A.D. )

The evidence shows that al-Fadl b. Shādhān refuted the possibility of divine inspiration for the imam and maintained that the imam's religious knowledge was based entirely on transmissio…
The Second-Century Šīʿite Ġulāt
This paper questions the suggestion of our sources that gnostic currents had already appeared among Šīʿites by the early second/eighth century. It contends that gnosticism did not surface in Šīʿism until the third/ninth century and that our information on its existence among second-century Šīʿites is the result of retrospective ascription to groups and individuals who, on account of their (real or alleged) messianic beliefs, had already been iden…
