  • Wearables and Sur(over)-Veillance, Sous(under)-Veillance, Co(So)-Veillance, and MetaVeillance (Veillance of Veillance) for Health and Well-Being

    Open Access•Mann, Steve Mann et al.•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 5

At the University of Toronto, we’re embarking on a bold new initiative to bring together these four disciplines: law, business, engineering, and medicine, through what we call “sousveillant systems”—grassroots systems of “bottom up” facilitation of cross-, trans-, inter-, meta-, and anti-disciplinarity, or, more importantly, cross-, trans-, and inter-passionary efforts. Passion is a better master than discipline (to paraphrase Albert Einstein’s “…

  • Big Data is a big lie without little data: Humanistic intelligence as a human right

    Open Access•Mann, Steve Mann•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2017

This article introduces an important concept: Transparency by way of Humanistic Intelligence as a human right, and in particular, Big/Little Data and Sur/Sous Veillance, where “Little Data” is to sousveillance (undersight) as “Big Data” is to surveillance (oversight). Veillance (Sur- and Sous-veillance) is a core concept not just in human–human interaction (e.g. people watching other people) but also in terms of Human–Computer Interaction. In thi…

  • New Media and the power politics of sousveillance in a surveillance-dominated world

    Open Access•Mann, Steve Mann et al.•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2013•Cited by: 40•References: 4

In this paper we address the increasingly complex constructs between power, and the practices of looking, in a mediated, mobile and networked culture. We develop and explore a nuanced understanding and ontology that examines veillance in both directions: surveillance and oversight, as well as sousveillance and “undersight”. In particular, we unpack the new relationships of power and democracy facilitated by mobile and pervasive computing. We diff…

  • Through the Glass, Lightly [Viewpoint]

    Open Access•Mann, S Mann•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2012

I begin this article with the fundamental premise that wearable computing will fundamentally improve the quality of our lives [1]. I can make this claim because for the past 20 years I have been walking around with digital eye glasses (DEG), and I believe my life has been enhanced as a result. Perhaps I am biased about wearable computing, but like my EyeTap invention that computationally processes everything I see, I try to tell it like it is. I …

  • Tel Aviv after 100: Notes toward a New Cultural History

    Mann, Mann Mann•ARTICLE•Jewish Social Studies•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In the wake of Tel Aviv's centennial in 2009, it seems an appropriate moment to attempt to tell not simply the story of the city but the story of its story—its historiography. In the past decade or so, academic scholarship and popular writing about Tel Aviv, including fiction and memoir, have been particularly concerned with questions of space and place. In this article, I address this spatial preoccupation in light of contemporary critical theor…

  • Intelligent Bathroom Fixtures and Systems: Existech Corporation's Safebath Project

    Mann, Steve Mann•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2003

EXISTech Corporation's computer networks, control systems and image-sensor technology facilitate hygienic touchless control of plumbing fixtures. Two of EXISTech's sensors are described here in detail: an active infrared faucet sensor and a passive infrared autoflush sensor. These devices allow internetworked plumbing systems to help facility managers and law-enforcement personnel remotely monitor the operation of bathroom fixtures. Intelligent f…

  • Decon 2 (Decon Squared): Deconstructing Decontamination

    Mann, Steve Mann•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2003

Decon is short for decontamination (e.g. stripdown and washdown in response to anthrax scares, etc.), but the term “decon” is also a short form for “deconstruction” (literary criticism asserting multiple conflicting interpretations of philosophical, political or social implications rather than an author's intention). The author describes an anthrax ready mailroom exhibit that included mass casualty decontamination showers, which he built in the s…

  • Existential Technology: Wearable Computing Is Not the Real Issue

    Mann, Steve Mann•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The author presents "Existential Technology" as a new category of in(ter)ventions and as a new theoretical framework for understanding privacy and identity. His thesis is twofold: (1) The unprotected individual has lost ground to invasive surveillance technologies and complex global organizations that undermine the humanistic property of the individual; (2) A way for the individual to be free and collegially assertive in such a world is to be "bo…

  • People Watching People Watchers: The Law Enforcement Company' for watching over those who come to see and be seen on the 'Urban Beach

    Open Access•Mann, Steve Mann et al.•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2002

This article presents my own personal narrative, in the existemology of a new but mostly deserted 'urban beach' right at downtown Toronto's epicenter. The new public space called 'Dundas Square', designed as 'Times Square North', forms Toronto's new civic center, around an urban beach theme with waterplay fountains, that rise and fall continuously, to create a beautiful and restful atmosphere of pounding surf. The space is policed by Intelligarde…

  • Sousveillance: Inventing and Using Wearable Computing Devices for Data Collection in Surveillance Environments

    Open Access•Mann, Stephen M Mann et al.•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2002•Cited by: 203•References: 4

This paper describes using wearable computing devices to perform "sousveillance" (inverse surveillance) as a counter to organizational surveillance. A variety of wearable computing devices generated different kinds of responses, and allowed for the collection of data in different situations. Visible sousveillance often evoked counter-performances by front-line surveillance workers. The juxtaposition of sousveillance with surveillance generates ne…

  • Computer architectures for protection of personal informatic property: Putting pirates, pigs and rapists in perspective

    Open Access•Mann, Steve Mann et al.•ARTICLE•First Monday•2000

Propertarian philosophy has so far focused on protecting that which we produce for others, perhaps for a price. It has failed to protect that which we may have no intention to give to others at any price. The former is well known as Intellectual Property (IP), while the latter is something I call Humanistic Property (HP). In the Goffman sense, IP is that which we "give" throught intentional creative action (e.g. the fruit of our labour), while HP…

  • Reflectionism" and "Diffusionism: New Tactics for Deconstructing the Video Surveillance Superhighway

    Mann, Steve Mann•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1998•Cited by: 8

The recent proliferation of video surveillance cameras interconnected with high-speed computers and central databases is moving us toward a high-speed “surveillance superhighway,” as cameras are used throughout entire cities to monitor citizens in public areas. As businesses work alongside governments to build this superhighway and expand it into private areas as well, there is a growing need to develop methodologies of questioning these practice…
