  • From Furnace to Mine

    Erin E O’connor, Erin O’connor•ARTICLE•West 86th•2024

Drawing on four weeks of fieldwork in 2023 at a glassmaking facility and at mines in the southeastern Appalachian region of the United States, this article asks how batchmaking (the mixing of the raw ingredients of glass) figured into early American studio glassblow ing. In the 1960s and 1970s batchmaking materials were salvaged from both industrial glassmaking sites and mines, a practice that became increasingly obsolete as ready-made batch beca…

  • Long Live Atahualpa

    Erin E O’connor, Erin O’connor•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2013

Emma Cervone’s Long Live Atahualpa contributes to the scholarly trend of examining Ecuadorian indigenous political activism from the perspective of grassroots organizations rather than only via national indigenous leaders. Also important is Cervone’s focus on activism in the central highland civil parish of Tixán, Chimborazo, rather than on the better-known cases in the northern highlands of Ecuador. Cervone asserts that examining national events…

  • La revolución política durante la época de la independencia

    Erin E O’connor, Erin O’connor•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2008

In La revolución política, Jaime Rodríguez builds on his extensive earlier work on the independence era, this time focusing exclusively on the Kingdom of Quito. Therefore it is not surprising to see familiar questions and arguments arise here. For example, one of his main assertions is that independence upheavals in the Kingdom of Quito did not constitute an anticolonial movement, but rather they were part of a larger political revolution going o…

This essay uses court disputes over indigenous widows’ land rights to examine the impact of an expanding national state on indigenous peasant interpersonal relations in late nineteenth-century Ecuador. In doing so, it offers a response to historian Carmen Ramos Escandón's recent call for historical studies of changing family life in order “to know how this domestic web is related to social processes in a broader sense and how the organization of …

Reduced to what he terms 'a useless torso, more like some…
