  • Jodorowsky, L’Incal et Dune

    Gilles Boileau•ARTICLE•T oung Pao•2024

  • The Prince of Huayuanzhuang 花園莊, Zu Jia 祖甲, and the Succession of Wu Ding 武丁

    Open Access•Gilles Boileau•ARTICLE•Early China•2023

Analysis of the oracular data newly discovered in the Shang era Huayuanzhuang site opens a fascinating window in the political and ritual activities of a prince previously unknown. He is identified as the prince Zai, the future king Zu Jia. These new data shed light of the pre-royal career of Zu Jia, and the nature and the mode of his relationship with the king Wu Ding, his father, and Lady Hao, his mother. This article also examines the difficul…

  • All about the Rites

Open Access•Gilles Boileau, Céline Bonicco-Donato et al.•BOOK•All about the Rites•2023

This third volume of the “Myriades d’Asies” series is the result of an international conference which was held at the Collège de France in 2018, and published in book form by Hémisphères Editions in 2021, the present digital edition being a revised and improved version of the printed edition. It intends to look afresh at the way ancient China progressively evolved into a ritualistic society, that is a world in which social interactions in times o…

  • Shang dynasty's "nine generations chaos" and the reign of Wu Ding

    Open Access•Gilles Boileau•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2023•References: 1

This article explores the political crisis before Wu Ding. The accession of king Wu Ding to the throne was not a given but the result of a political move by his father Xiao Yi. It must be seen as one of the consequences of an earlier political crisis named the "nine generations chaos" by Sima Qian, during which an attempt to share royal power between two royal lines finally collapsed and led to a move by Pan Geng to a new capital. This new city h…

    Gilles Boileau•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•2021

  • Communion of the Flesh

    Gilles Boileau•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•2013

This article analyses the religious theme in two novels of Michel Houellebecq, Les Particules élémentaires and La Possibilité d'une Île. These two novels oppose the dying contemporary world with its future in a way that makes them mirrors of each other: they reinterpret Christian dogma in a technological fashion, giving birth to two opposed Utopias, the first achieving total success through a complete annihilation of the "old" humankind and the s…

  • Wu and shaman

    Open Access•Gilles Boileau•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2002•Cited by: 6

Since Shangdai de shenhua yu wushu, Chen Mengjia's article on Shang mythology, some sinological works have proposed that the Chinese wu was an equivalent of the Siberian shaman. I examine first the issues in anthropological comparatism involved in this problem and provide up-to-date information on Siberian shamanism. It must be noted that the Chinese texts are by no means equivalent to modern anthropological data and that these texts did not orig…
