The Travels of Ibn Battuta, AD 1325-1354
This volume completes the translation of Ibn Battuta's narrative. Volume III ended with Ibn Battuta's appointment by the Sultan of Delhi to accompany an embassy to China. In Volume IV he describes his journey to the coast where he embarked near Cambay and sailed to Calicut. Here the ships which were to take them to China were wrecked. Dutch Travellers in Arabia in the Seventeenth Century
The attempt of the Dutch to develop trade with Arabia in the seventeenth century occasioned several journeys in the Yemen which are ignored in the histories of Arabian exploration. The earliest of the travellers, Pieter van den Broecke, wrote an account of his voyages, well known in his own century, which included a description of his visit to Ta'iz and San'a. There are a number of journeys made, or alleged to have been made, in Arabia between the middle of the fifteenth and the middle of the seventeenth century of which there is no mention, or at least no adequate account, in Hogarth's Penetration of Arabia or in R. The Date of Pitts's Pilgrimage to Mecca
The date of Joseph Pitts's visit to Mecca, the first known to have been made by an Englishman, has not been satisfactorily determined hitherto. It appears from his own book that he was captured by Algerine pirates in 1678. Cruel treatment at length drove him to profess Islam.
