The Jews in a Polish Private Town
Common Wealth, Common Good
This is an analysis of Polish political thought and opinion in the first two decades of the eighteenth century, based on published pamphlets and books and manuscript sources. The latter are chiefly the records of the proceedings of the regional assemblies of the gentry (sejmiki). The secondary literature, in Polish and English, is invoked continuously in a sort of dialogue throughout the text. The author, Benedict Wagner-Rundell, contends that th…
The Introduction to Divre binah by Dov Ber of Bolechów
Surprisingly, historians have not yet carefully examined the introductory pages of the unpublished manuscript Divre binah (Understanding Words) by Dov Ber Birkenthal. Although the evidence of a single witness seldom leads to the revision of historical narratives, the material provided in these introductory pages is quite rich and suggests much about a number of topics that will be of particular interest to students of the eighteenth century. Amon…

The Jews in a Polish Private Town
In and out of the Ghetto
During the 1920s much attention was paid to the history of Jews in Germany since the Enlightenment and the subject became popular again, with renewed emphasis, after 1945. Many historians were deeply committed to understanding and explaining the tragic path that led from the emancipation of the Jews to the Holocaust. For a long time, much less work was done on the history of Jews in Germany in earlier periods, particularly the period between the …

An Advantage to Peculiarity? The Case of the Polish Commonwealth
The investigation of the history of the Jews in the Polish Commonwealth requires not only research on specific topics but broader reflection as well. The special place and role of the Jews in Polish society and the distinguishing characteristics of the Jewish experience in Poland need to be rescued from unwarranted generalizations which may result in misrepresentation. 1 On the broadest level, this essay is an initial step in the direction of the…
