  • Balancing protection of participants and other stakeholders with openness

Open Access•Daphine Tinashe Nyachowe, Victoria Bronstein et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2025

National and international data sharing in health research is critical for advancing scientific discovery and fostering collaborative partnerships. With growing technological advances and an increasing desire for open science, data sharing enables researchers to access diverse datasets to generate novel insights. Adopting robust policies is key to responsible data sharing, which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, ensures ethical and legal c…

  • Multimorbidity in African ancestry populations

Open Access•Michelle Kamp, Okechinyere Achilonu et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2023

OBJECTIVES: Multimorbidity (MM) is a growing concern linked to poor outcomes and higher healthcare costs. While most MM research targets European ancestry populations, the prevalence and patterns in African ancestry groups remain underexplored. This study aimed to identify and summarise the available literature on MM in populations with African ancestry, on the continent, and in the diaspora. DESIGN: A scoping review was conducted in five databas…

  • Estimating the burden of cardiovascular risk in community dwellers over 40 years old in South Africa, Kenya, Burkina Faso and Ghana

    Open Access•Ryan G Wagner, Nigel J Crowther et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors are increasing in sub-Saharan Africa. The impact of these risk factors on future CVD outcomes and burden is poorly understood. We examined the magnitude of modifiable risk factors, estimated future CVD risk and compared results between three commonly used 10-year CVD risk factor algorithms and their variants in four African countries. METHODS: In the Africa-Wits-INDEPTH partnership for Genom…

  • Prevalence and socio-demographic correlates of tobacco and alcohol use in four sub-Saharan African countries

Open Access•Palwendé Romuald Boua, Cassandra Claire Soo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Regional variation in the patterns and prevalence of substance use was observed across study sites, and in rural and urban settings. The high levels of substance use recorded in this study are of concern due to the increased risk of associated morbidities. Further longitudinal data will be valuable in determining trends in substance misuse in Africa

  • Demographic, socio-economic and behavioural correlates of BMI in middle-aged black men and women from urban Johannesburg, South Africa

Open Access•Rafael Lapesa Melgar, Lisa K Micklesfield et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

The sex difference in BMI and the prevalence of overweight and obesity between black South African men and women from Soweto, as well as the sex-specific associations with various demographic, socio-economic and behavioural factors, highlight the need for more tailored interventions to slow down the obesity epidemic

  • Genomic and environmental risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases in Africa

Open Access•Stuart A Ali, Cassandra Claire Soo et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

There is an alarming tide of cardiovascular and metabolic disease (CMD) sweeping across Africa. This may be a result of an increasingly urbanized lifestyle characterized by the growing consumption of processed and calorie-dense food, combined with physical inactivity and more sedentary behaviour. While the link between lifestyle and public health has been extensively studied in Caucasian and African American populations, few studies have been con…

  • Socio-demographic and behavioural determinants of body mass index among an adult population in rural Northern Ghana

Open Access•Engelbert A Nonterah, Cornelius Debpuur et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

BACKGROUND: Obesity and associated cardiometabolic diseases are increasing in urban sub-Saharan Africa due to a complex epidemiological and nutritional transition. Related data on rural communities is scarce. OBJECTIVES: The study characterized the socio-demographic and behavioural factors influencing body mass index (BMI) among adults in rural Northern Ghana Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study involving adults aged 40-60 years resi…

  • Gender differences in sociodemographic and behavioural factors associated with BMI in an adult population in rural Burkina Faso – an AWI-Gen sub-study

Open Access•Palwendé Romuald Boua, Hermann Sorgho et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

BACKGROUND: The global health transition is linked with an increased burden of non-communicable diseases with cardiovascular diseases leading the epidemic. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the prevalence of obesity has increased during the past decades and there is a need to investigate the associated driving factors. In Burkina Faso obesity remains low, especially in rural areas. In this study we recruited middle-aged adults, as part of a larger stu…

  • Regional and sex-specific variation in BMI distribution in four sub-Saharan African countries

Open Access•Michèle Ramsay, Nigel J Crowther et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

BACKGROUND: African populations are characterised by diversity at many levels including: demographic history, genetic ancestry, language, wealth, socio-political landscape, culture and behaviour. Several of these have a profound impact on body fat mass. Obesity, a key risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, in the wake of the epidemiological and health transitions across the continent, requires detailed analysis together with other…

  • Sociodemographic and behavioural factors associated with body mass index among men and women in Nairobi slums

Open Access•Gershim Asiki, Shukri F Mohamed et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) is rising globally with a faster increase in urban areas in low- and middle-income countries. It is critical to identify modifiable risk factors for BMI to prevent the occurrence of associated health consequences. OBJECTIVE: To investigate socio-demographic, behavioural and biological factors associated with BMI in Nairobi slums. METHODS: In 2014-2015, a cross sectional study of men and women aged 40-60 years in …

  • Patterns of adult body mass in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Moffat J Nyirenda, Michèle Ramsay et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

  • Different adiposity indices and their association with blood pressure and hypertension in middle-aged urban black South African men and women

    Open Access•Pedro T Pisa, Lisa K Micklesfield et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

All body composition parameters were associated with hypertension and FM/FFSTM ratio showed the strongest relationship. It was reassuring that WC remains a useful measure of central adiposity that can be used as a risk indicator for hypertension if more sophisticated measures are not available. Furthermore, our data in part, implies that reducing abdominal adiposity in aging adults could contribute to reducing the risk of elevated blood pressure …
