  • Resistance to cephalosporins and quinolones by Escherichia coli isolated from irrigation water from eastern Lima, Perú

Open Access•Mónica Huamán Iturrizaga, Gina Salvador-Luján et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Peruana de Medicina…•2024

Motivation for the study. Aquatic systems, including irrigation water, have been identified as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance, with few studies in Peru on the presence of Escherichia coli and their levels of virulence and antimicrobial resistance. Main findings. Our results show the presence of E. coli above the established standard for vegetable irrigation water, some with very high levels of antimicrobial resistance. Implications. The p…

Motivation for the study. To describe the characteristics of patients who died from severe dengue fever during the 2017 El Niño in Piura. Main findings. Mortality from severe dengue was higher in adult women. First contact with healthcare took place mostly in higher level hospitals. Admission to a specialized unit was late for severe dengue cases. Implications. Control of dengue fever involves several aspects, such as, access to health, preventio…

  • Caracterización de Escherichia coli D7111 productora de β-lactamasa TEM-176

Open Access•Joaquı́m Ruiz, María J Pons et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Peruana de Medicina…•2021

The present report is the original description of bla TEM-176. The mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents were determined in an enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, determining the susceptibility to 22 antimicrobials classified in 15 different groups by agar diffusion and establishing the phylogenetic group, mechanisms of resistance and presence of Class 1 and 2 integrons. Integrons and β-lactam resistance genes were sequenced. The isolate…

The mechanisms of resistance to nitrofurans from 18 meat samples with Salmonella enterica (chicken: 15; beef: 2; pork: 1) collected in Lima (Peru) were analyzed. The isolates were serotyped and the susceptibility levels to furazolidone and nitrofurantoin [with and without the efflux pump inhibitor Phenyl-Arginine- β-naphthylamide (PAβN)], the presence of mutations in the snrA and cnr genes and the transferability of resistance by conjugation were…

The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of colistin- and carbapenemic-resistant genes in multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated at the Instituto Materno Perinatal de Lima (2015-2018). Susceptibility levels were analyzed by disk diffusion and microdilution. The presence of colistin- and carbapenemic-resistant genes was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and was related to clonality. A total of 36 K. …

Multiple drug resistance levels were high compared to antibiotics frequently used in humans; chicken and beef are highlighted as potential reservoirs of BLEE and pAmpC-producing Escherichia coli, respectively

The main aim of this study was to establish the resistance levels to antimicrobial agents, in 222 non-pathogenic E. Coli strains of fecal origin in Peru. The proportion of resistance found to the evaluated antimicrobials was ampicillin (62.6%), cotrimoxazole (48,6%), tetracycline (43,0%) and chloramphenicol (15,8%). We emphasize the high resistance levels found for quinolones: 32% for nalidixic acid (NAL) and 12% for ciprofloxacin (CIP). These hi…
