  • Arabic Poetry and Neoplatonic Poetics

    Open Access•Stefan Sperl•ARTICLE•Journal of Arabic Literature•2025

The paper argues that a Neoplatonic reading of classical Arabic poetry can help to understand the cosmological implications of its figurative language and provide a new conceptual framework for comparisons between Arabic literature and other literatures, both European and Middle Eastern. It begins with an outline of Neoplatonic cosmology with reference to the Arabic adaptations of Plotinus’s Enneads which appeared in the ninth century CE . The mi…

  • "Man's "Hollow Core: Ethics and aesthetics in Ḥadīth literature and classical Arabic adab

    Open Access•Stefan Sperl•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2007

Classical Arabic Ḥadīth literature is largely composed of micro-narratives recording the sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muḥammad. This study seeks to examine their literary form by focusing on selected examples listed in the canonical Ḥadīth compendia under the heading of adab, a term which may be rendered here as "practical ethics" but which is also commonly used to designate classical Arabic belles-lettres. While the latter is a type of liter…

  • Crossing enemy boundaries: Al-Buhturī's ode on the ruins of Ctesiphon re-read in the light of Virgil and Wilfred Owen

    Open Access•Stefan Sperl•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2006

This article seeks to gain a better understanding of a famous ode by the 'Abbāsid court poet al-Buhturī (d. 897) by comparing it with two other works which exhibit a similar thematic development. One is an extract from The Aeneid by Virgil (d. 19 BC), the other a poem by Wilfred Owen (d. 1918). The three texts emanate from imperial identities (Roman, Arab and British) in a state of crisis, which in turn paves the way for cathartic encounters with…

    Open Access•Stefan Sperl, Sperl•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In his article 'Lecture de la Fātiḥa' Muhammad Arkoun develops principles for a contemporary rereading of scripture which differ markedly from those of classical exegesis. The latter rests upon the dogmatic certainty that scripture constitutes the only truth and the whole truth; hence it sees its task as rendering this truth accessible by recourse to a wide range of explanatory techniques. Arkoun's principles, on the other hand, are based upon th…

    Open Access•Stefan Sperl•BOOK•Mannerism in Arabic Poetry•1989

This book attempts to identify elements of mannerism and classicism in medieval Arabic poetry. Mannerism in Arabic has usually been linked with the appearance of an ornate rhetorical style called badi which became characteristic of poetry and prose from the fifth century AH/ninth century AD onwards. This study, however, is not so much concerned with the discussion of rhetorical devices as manifest in selected passages and individual lines of poet…

  • Islamic Kingship and Arabic Panegyric Poetry in the Early 9Th Century

    Stefan Sperl•ARTICLE•Journal of Arabic Literature•1977•Cited by: 2

Among the ceremonial features of Abbasid court life was the recitation of poems in praise of the Caliphs and notables. These followed a clearly preordained pattern in their composition, and on recitation in the presence of the assembled court their authors were not seldom richly rewarded with money and robes of honour. The analysis of the poetic form of the royal panegyrics show that its development is a perfect illustration of the function of Ki…
