Factors associated with laboratory-confirmed measles cases during the 2023 and 2024 outbreaks in Tanzania—a mixed-methods study
Background Despite the introduction of the two-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV2) in 2014, measles remains a persistent public health problem in Tanzania, characterized by recurrent outbreaks and shifting epidemiological patterns. Understanding the epidemiology of measles in the country is therefore essential to inform context-specific elimination strategies. Methods During the 2023 and 2024 measles outbreaks, data and samples from the Nation…
Unpacking ‘irrational’ behaviours
Stewardship of antibiotic medicines will likely play a key role in curtailing the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) globally. In East Africa, drug sellers are a critical group for interventions because they often dispense without prescription and violate regulations designed to facilitate antibiotic stewardship. Currently, measures to tackle regulatory avoidance are often rooted in individuated cognitive-behavioural approaches that label sel…
Treatment seeking behaviours, antibiotic use and relationships to multi-drug resistance
Antibacterial resistance (ABR) is a major public health threat. An important accelerating factor is treatment-seeking behaviour, including inappropriate antibiotic (AB) use. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) this includes taking ABs with and without prescription sourced from various providers, including health facilities and community drug sellers. However, investigations of complex treatment-seeking, AB use and drug resistance in …
Developing a logic model for communication-based interventions on antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
The importance of communication in enhancing people’s awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is consistently recognised in global and national action plans (NAPs). Despite this, there have been relatively few national AMR communication campaigns which use a structured approach to take account of the local context, encompass co-design with the target audience and use a logic model to help inform its design, implementation an…
Treatment seeking and antibiotic use for urinary tract infection symptoms in the time of Covid-19 in Tanzania and Uganda
Background: There is still little empirical evidence on how the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and associated regulations may have disrupted care-seeking for non-COVID-19 conditions or affected antibiotic behaviours in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to investigate the differences in treatment-seeking behaviours and antibiotic use for urinary tract infection (UTI)-like symptoms before and during the pandemic at…
The High Seropositivity of Mumps Virus IgG Antibodies among School-Aged Children in Rural Areas of the Mbarali District in the Mbeya Region, Tanzania
Mumps is an acute contagious viral disease caused by paramyxovirus characterized by complications that include orchitis, oophoritis, aseptic meningitis, and spontaneous abortion among many others. This study reports high mumps IgG seropositivity among school-aged children in rural areas of the Mbeya region, information that might be useful in understanding the epidemiology of mumps and instituting appropriate control measures including vaccinatio…
Five-year tuberculosis trends analysis in eight districts of Mwanza region, Tanzania; (2017–2021)
The TB case detection rate decreased in Mwanza region from 43.9 in 2017 to 21.4 per 100,000 population in 2021. Other parameters were missing in the database, which indicates remarkable gaps in the established database to monitor TB management in the region. The program may consider investigating and improving the documentation of information necessary to attain its goals
The process of harmonizing competency-based curricula for medicine and nursing degree programmes
In many low- and middle-income countries, there seems to be a mismatch between graduate skills and healthcare industry requirements due to variability in curricula. With the current increased global demand for competent health profession graduates, harmonizing competency-based curricula (CBC) is necessary to address this mismatch. This paper describes how three health professions training universities in Tanzania and their two long-standing Unite…
High Seroprevalence of Sars-CoV-2 in Mwanza, Northwestern Tanzania
The transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, has been documented worldwide. However, the evidence of the extent to which transmission has occurred in different countries is still to be established. Understanding the magnitude and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 through seroprevalence studies is important in designing control and preventive strategies in communities. This study investigated the seropositivity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus…
High Mortality among Premature Neonates with Positive Blood Culture Neonatal Sepsis in a Tertiary Hospital, Tanzania
Well-documented vital signs are key in the prediction of sepsis in low- and middle-income countries. We determined prevalence, associated factors, and outcomes of positive blood culture sepsis in premature neonates at Bugando Medical Centre Mwanza, Tanzania. Temperature, oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiratory rate, and random blood glucose were repeatedly recorded at admission, 8 h, and 24 h in all 250 neonates enrolled. Clinical and microbio…
Occurrence of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) Producers, Quinolone and Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Isolated from Environmental Samples along Msimbazi River Basin Ecosystem in Tanza…
We conducted environmental surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) bacteria in the Msimbazi river basin in Tanzania to determine the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing, carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and quinolone resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. A total of 213 Enterobacteriaceae isolates were recovered from 219 samples. Out of the recovered isolates, 45.5% ( n = 97) were Klebsiella pn…
