Records reveal the vast historical extent of European oyster reef ecosystems
Anthropogenic activities have impacted marine ecosystems at extraordinary scales. Biogenic reef ecosystems built by the European flat oyster ( Ostrea edulis ) typically declined before scientific monitoring. The past form and extent of these habitats thus remains unknown, with such information potentially providing valuable perspectives for current management and policy. Collating >1,600 records published over 350 years, we created a map of histo…
A Socio-Technical Exploration for Reducing & Mitigating the Risk of Retained Foreign Objects
A Retained Foreign Object (RFO) is a fairly infrequent but serious adverse event. An accurate rate of RFOs is difficult to establish due to underreporting but it has been estimated that incidences range between 1/1000 and 1/19,000 procedures. The cost of a RFO incident may be substantial and three-fold: (i) the cost to the patient of physical and/or psychological harm; (ii) the reputational cost to an institution and/or healthcare provider; and (…
Indigenous Protected Areas and Iccas – Commonalities, Contrasts and Confusions
ICCA' refers to areas of land and/or sea where Indigenous peoples or local communities closely connected with the areas have decision-making responsibility, and where conservation of natural and associated cultural values is achieved either intentionally, or incidentally as the result of cultural or livelihood activities (IUCN, 2014). The Canon in Southeast Asian Literature
The literary canon is one of the most lively areas of debate in contemporary literary studies. This set of essays is both timely and original in its focus on the canon in South-East Asian literatures, covering Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. They vary in focus, from the broad panoramic survey of trends in a national literature to very specific discussions of the role of individuals in shaping a canon…

Paliochora
This paper is a report of the 1985 and 1986 survey work conducted at the Byzantine citysite of Paliochora (Hagios Demetrios) on Kythera. The city was traditionally founded in the late twelfth century and destroyed by the pirate Barbarossa in 1537. The report begins with a brief historical summary of the island's history under the Byzantines and Venetians, and a description of the site. The rest of the paper is devoted to a discussion of the initi…
A Practical Guide to the Collection of Botanical Specimens for the Field Anthropologists , by Denise Wright
David Thompson's Surveying Instruments and Methods in the Northwest 1790–1812
The paper examines the surveying instruments and methods of David Thompson, the renowned Canadian fur trader, explorer, surveyor and cartographer. A description is provided of his instruments and of the publications which he used in conducting his surveys. A brief background of the state of the science of practical astronomy is given, followed by a layman's look at Thompson's surveying methods in the North American wilderness. His methods of dete…
Knossos 1975
We give here a partial account of trial excavations undertaken at Knossos by the British School in autumn 1975 at the request of the Greek Government. The site lay in a field on the south-east flank of the acropolis, immediately above and west of the unmetalled track that runs roughly north–south, leading from the upper part of Knossos (Bougadha Metochi) towards the Venetian aqueduct and, eventually, to Arkhanes (see Site Plan, Fig. 1). The field…
