  • Evaluation of a population-wide, systematic screening initiative for tuberculosis on Daru island, Western Province, Papua New Guinea

Open Access•Paison Dakulala, Margaret Kal et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The screening project demonstrated its effectiveness with the high Xpert-positive TB prevalence among the participants and by successfully yielding additional cases of bacteriologically confirmed TB including rifampicin-resistant TB. The results and lessons learnt from the project should inform future TB screening initiatives in Papua New Guinea

  • A qualitative assessment on the acceptability of providing cash transfers and social health insurance for tuberculosis-affected families in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Open Access•Rachel Forse, Thanh Thi Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

To achieve the Sustainable Development Goal’s targets of universal health coverage (UHC) and poverty reduction, interventions are required that strengthen and harmonize both UHC and social protection. Vietnam is committed to achieving financial protection and over 90% of the general population has enrolled in its social health insurance (SHI) scheme. However, an estimated 63% of tuberculosis (TB)-affected households in Vietnam still face catastro…

  • Determinants of catastrophic costs among households affected by multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam

Open Access•Thi Anh Mai Pham, Rachel Forse et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Despite good social protection coverage, most people with MDR-TB in HCMC experienced catastrophic costs. Incurrence of catastrophic costs was independently associated with being the household's primary income earner or being unemployed. Revision and expansion of strategies to mitigate TB-related catastrophic costs, in particular avoiding unemployment and income loss, are urgently required

  • Economic evaluation of a community health worker model for tuberculosis care in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam

Open Access•Luan Nguyen Quang Vo, Rachel Forse et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The evaluated CHW-based TB intervention generated substantial individual and societal benefits. The SROI methodology may be an alternative for the economic evaluation of healthcare interventions

  • Evaluating novel engagement mechanisms, yields and acceptability of tuberculosis screening at retail pharmacies in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam

    Open Access•Phuong M T Tran, Thu A Dam et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Pharmacies represent a key health system entry point for people with TB in Viet Nam, but high fragmentation hinders their broader engagement. Professional networking apps may be able to facilitate pharmacy engagement for systematic TB screening and referral. Between September and December 2019, we piloted the use of a social networking app, SwipeRx, to recruit pharmacists for a TB referral scheme across four districts of Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Na…

  • Will more sensitive diagnostics identify tuberculosis missed by clinicians? Evaluating Xpert MTB/RIF testing in Guatemala

Open Access•Jacob Creswell, Andrew James Codlin et al.•ARTICLE•Gaceta Sanitaria•2020

To assess the impact of introducing Xpert as a follow-on test after smear microscopy on the total number pulmonary TB notifications. Genexpert systems were installed in six departments across Guatemala, and Xpert was indicated as a follow-on test for people with smear-negative results. We analyzed notifications to national tuberculosis (TB) programmes (NTP) and the project's laboratory data to assess coverage of the intervention and case detectio…

  • A comparative impact evaluation of two human resource models for community-based active tuberculosis case finding in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam

Open Access•Luan Nguyen Quang Vo, Rachel Forse et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Both salaried and volunteer CHW human resource models demonstrated additionality in case notifications compared to routine case finding by the government TB program. The salaried employee CHW model achieved a greater impact on notifications and should be prioritized for scale-up, given sufficient resources

  • Performance of algorithms for tuberculosis active case finding in underserved high-prevalence settings in Cambodia

Open Access•Kimcheng Choun, Tom Decroo et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2019

To diagnose all TB forms, X-ray should be part of the diagnostic algorithm. The combination of X-ray and Xpert testing for high-risk clients was the most effective ACF approach in this setting
