  • Development of a Plasmodium vivax malaria model for evaluating the effects of control strategies on the malaria burden in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

Open Access•Hye Seong, Jiyeon Suh et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: malaria has been one of the most troublesome diseases in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Given that a majority of malaria cases are concentrated near the demilitarized zone, concerted elimination efforts from both the Republic of Korea (ROK) and DPRK are essential for a malaria-free Korean Peninsula. This study assessed the impact of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and tafenoquine on malaria incidence in DPRK. Methods:…

  • Potential applicability of the importation risk index for predicting the risk of rarely imported infectious diseases

    Open Access•Kyung-Duk Min, Kyung‐duk Min et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our study found that the IR index cannot be generally applicable for predicting rare importation events. However, it showed the potential utility of the IR index by suggesting acceptable performance in rabies models. Further studies are recommended to explore the generalizability of the IR index's applicability and to propose disease-specific prediction models

  • Modelling the impact of rapid diagnostic tests on Plasmodium vivax malaria in South Korea: A cost–benefit analysis

Open Access•Jung Ho Kim, Jiyeon Suh et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

Background Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are widely used for diagnosing Plasmodium vivax malaria, especially in resource-limited countries. However, the impact of RDTs on P. vivax malaria incidence and national medical costs has not been evaluated. We assessed the impact of RDT implementation on P. vivax malaria incidence and overall medical expenditures in South Korea and performed a cost–benefit analysis from the payer’s perspective. Methods We…

  • Predicting the impact of control strategies on the tuberculosis burden in South and North Korea using a mathematical model

Open Access•Hyunwoo Cho, Youngmok Park et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

BACKGROUND: Among high-income countries, South Korea has a considerable tuberculosis (TB) burden; North Korea has one of the highest TB burdens in the world. Predicting the impact of control strategies on the TB burden can help to efficiently implement TB control programmes. METHODS: We designed a deterministic compartmental model of TB in Korea. After calibration with notification of incidence data from South Korea, the TB burden for 2040 was pr…
