  • Federal Student Loan Repayment Rates at HBCUs and Other Institutions

Open Access•Deniz Baglan, James V Koch et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2026

This paper examines why 3-year federal student loan repayment rates differ between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other not-for-profit, 4-year institutions, and how institutional characteristics—such as resource levels, student composition, and intercollegiate athletics—contribute to this gap. Using a panel of 709 institutions from FY 2010 to FY 2017, we apply entropy balancing to reweight characteristics and estimate ra…

  • But Who Are the Victims? Reassessing the 568 Higher Education Cartel

    Open Access•James V Koch•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Thirty prestigious independent American institutions of higher education were at some time members of the 568 higher education group (often labeled a cartel). Seventeen of them were sued by the U.S. Government and representative students who alleged that their meetings and deliberations resulted in collusion that caused students to pay higher prices. Twelve of the seventeen institutions subsequently settled their cases and by 2024 collectively ha…

  • Using the LSAT as a labor market thermometer for lawyers

    Open Access•James V Koch, Barbara Blake‐gonzalez•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2023•References: 6

We rely upon a 50-state, 20-year panel to find that the number of Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) takers is only loosely related to economic conditions-although slightly more for men than for women, who in 2020 accounted for 58% of all LSAT takers. The number of test takers rose more than 35% between 2014 and 2020. This wave accentuated an already existing downtrend in the median real income of lawyers, and thus provides support for the hypothe…

Open Access•Richard J Cebula, Richard Cebula et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Public higher education in the United States is being challenged, as never before, by numerous conditions that need to be addressed if the public college and university systems are to survive and fulfill their responsibilities to the American public. Student enrollment at these institutions has been on a significant downward trend for a full decade. There has been a discernible decline in the esteem with which the American public holds higher edu…

  • The final 2000 Census state response rates

    Open Access•James V Koch, Richard Cebula•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The decennial United States Census of Population determines not only political representation, but also how more than $185 billion of federal funds are allocated. Hence, there is intense interest in who responds, or does not respond, to Census queries. Both the popular media and the Bureau of the Census officials have developed a set of informal hypotheses which speak to who responds. Nine such hypotheses are identified and tested. For example, i…

    Open Access•James V Koch, Wilbert M Leonard•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1978•Cited by: 5

Economic cartel theory and Sociological social movement theory are used to achieve a socio-economic analysis of the problems and behaviour of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It is demonstrated that both cartel theory and social movement theory predict substantially similar behavior on the part of the NCAA and its 800-plus member institutions. Specific issues such as "need"scholarships, the possibility that the" big-time"footb…
