  • Acceptability of minimally invasive autopsy by community members and healthcare workers in Siaya and Kisumu counties, western Kenya, 2017–2018

Open Access•Peter Otieno, Victor Akelo et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Worldwide, nearly six million children under the age of five (

  • Causes of death in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected children aged under-five years in western Kenya

Dickens O Onyango, Mercè de Febrer et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS•2022

Nearly all HIV-infected decedents' underlying cause of death was HIV disease, which was associated with malnutrition. Our findings underscore the need for strengthening early identification and management of HIV-infected children. Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of malnutrition could be instrumental in improving the survival of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected children.

  • Evaluation of the collaborative integrated surveillance system (ViCo) in Guatemala

Open Access•Jahn Jaramillo, Mariangeli Freitas Ning et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Stakeholders perceived ViCo to be useful. They recommended measures to improve system performance and quality, including simplifying the surveillance system, routine data analysis and feedback, and channeling efforts towards integrating surveillance data into the national health information system. To create a well-performing surveillance system and achieve the intended objective of surveillance for public health action, ongoing evaluation and as…

  • Where Are the Newly Diagnosed HIV Positives in Kenya? Time to Consider Geo-Spatially Guided Targeting at a Finer Scale to Reach the “First 90”

Open Access•Anthony Waruru, Joyce Wamicwe et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: The UNAIDS 90-90-90 Fast-Track targets provide a framework for assessing coverage of HIV testing services (HTS) and awareness of HIV status – the “first 90.” In Kenya, the bulk of HIV testing targets are aligned to the five highest HIV-burden counties. However, we do not know if most of the new HIV diagnoses are in these five highest-burden counties or elsewhere. Methods: We analyzed facility-level HTS data in Kenya from 1 October 201…

  • Mapping geographic clusters of new HIV diagnoses to inform granular-level interventions for HIV epidemic control in western Kenya

Open Access•Hellen Muttai, Bernard Guyah et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Our study used routine public health program data to identify granular geographic clusters of higher new HIV diagnoses, and sub-populations with higher HIV-positive yield in the setting of a generalized HIV epidemic. In order to target HIV testing and prevention interventions to finer granular geographic areas for maximal epidemiologic impact, integrating geospatial analysis into routine public health programs can be useful

  • Epidemiological profile of individuals diagnosed with HIV

Richelle Harklerode, Wanjiru Waruiru et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2020

Understanding the characteristics of individuals who are newly diagnosed with HIV is critical to controlling the HIV epidemic. Characterizing this population can improve strategies to identify undiagnosed positives and assist in targeting the provision of HIV services to improve health outcomes. We describe the characteristics of newly diagnosed HIV cases in western Kenya from 124 health facilities. The study cohort cases were matched to prevent …

  • Development and Validation of a Sociodemographic and Behavioral Characteristics-Based Risk-Score Algorithm for Targeting HIV Testing Among Adults in Kenya

Open Access•Hellen Muttai, Bernard Guyah et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2020

To inform targeted HIV testing, we developed and externally validated a risk-score algorithm that incorporated behavioral characteristics. Outpatient data from five health facilities in western Kenya, comprising 19,458 adults ≥ 15 years tested for HIV from September 2017 to May 2018, were included in univariable and multivariable analyses used for algorithm development. Data for 11,330 adults attending one high-volume facility were used for valid…

  • Menstrual cups and cash transfer to reduce sexual and reproductive harm and school dropout in adolescent schoolgirls

Open Access•Garazi Zulaika, Daniel Kwaro et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

    ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03051789 , 15th February 2017

  • The relationship between adherence to clinic appointments and year-one mortality for newly enrolled HIV infected patients at a regional referral hospital in Western Kenya, January 2011–December 2012

Muthusi Kimeu, Barbara Burmen et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

This retrospective cohort analysis was conducted to describe the association between adherence to clinic appointments and mortality, one year after enrollment into HIV care. We examined appointment-adherence for newly enrolled patients between January 2011 and December 2012 at a regional referral hospital in western Kenya. The outcomes of interest were patient default, risk factors for repeat default, and year-one risk of death. Of 582 enrolled p…

  • Microclimate and Human Factors in the Divergent Ecology of Aedes aegypti along the Arizona, U.S./Sonora, MX Border

    Open Access•Mary H Hayden, Christopher K Uejio et al.•ARTICLE•EcoHealth•2010

  • Community beliefs and practices about dengue in Puerto Rico

    Open Access•Carmen L Pérez-Guerra, Emily Zielinski-Gutiérrez et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2009

Suggested strategies to motivate residents' actions included working with government agencies to address structural problems that increase mosquito populations, improving access to information on garbage collection and water disposal through telephone hotlines, increasing publicity and information about dengue by mass media campaigns, and educating health professionals

  • Barriers and Bridges to Prevention and Control of Dengue

Open Access•Jennifer Spiegel, Jerry Spiegel et al.•ARTICLE•EcoHealth•2005

  • Correlates of Sexual Activity and Condom Use among Secondary‐school Students in Urban Peru

    Open Access•Robert J Magnani, Eric E Seiber et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Recent data indicate that adolescent fertility rates in Peru remain high and that Peruvian adolescents and young adults account for a disproportionate share of new HIV infections. The present study was undertaken to identify key risk and protective factors for early sexual activity and unprotected sex among secondai‐y‐school students in nine large cities in Peru. Survey data from 6,962 students aged 13–18 are consistent with existing research in …
