  • Dialogues subversifs

    Open Access•Laura Bullon-Cassis, N Tchermalykh•ARTICLE•Marges•2025

  • Anthropology of Art and Performance

    N Tchermalykh•CHAPTER•2024

The anthropology of art and performance is an interdisciplinary research area that emerged from the convergence of social and visual anthropology, sociology of art and performance, visual and museum studies, and cultural studies. Despite its fragmented nature, anthropology of art as a field is marked by theoretical productivity, inherent interdisciplinarity, and empirical depth. Throughout the 20th century, anthropologists have invested significa…

  • State of the arts. An ethnography of German theater and migration By Jonas Tinius, Cambridge, NY

    Open Access•N Tchermalykh•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2024

  • Introduction to the Special Issue

    Open Access•N Tchermalykh, Elisa Floristán Millán•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2024•References: 9

This special issue of Anthropology in Action focuses on the intersection of two equally important, and yet unequally researched, areas of anthropological inquiry: migration and childhood. In recent years, the mediatic attention to migration has led to an increased visibility of children and youth moving through transnational contexts, often with limited access to social and economic resources. Undoubtedly, the transnational movement of young peop…

It has been a year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started. It is clear that the impact of this war goes far beyond Ukraine. We already know that it will have long-lasting consequences for the regional and global economy, in particular for energy and food security. The war is reshuffling old geo-political arrangements and alliances. It is also shaping the political landscapes of European states: international relations, inflation and migrat…

  • “We Felt That the Country Was in the Stage of a Rough Cut…”

    Open Access•N Tchermalykh•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology•2022

In March of 2014, I attended the first screening of Euromaidan: Rough Cut—a collective documentary chronicle of Ukraine’s Maidan Revolution. Quite unexpectedly the event ended with an improvized mourning ritual for deceased Maidan protesters. Observed in the film, this ritual then transcended the screen and spread through the audience, stimulating an experience similar to a “collective catharsis.” What are the reasons for such a strong affective …

  • Quand l'art fait loi

    N Tchermalykh•ARTICLE•Gradhiva•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 8

  • Will Pussy Riot Dance on #Euromaidan? New Dissidence, Civic Disobedience and Cyber-Mythology in the Post-Soviet Context

    Open Access•N Tchermalykh•ARTICLE•Religion and Gender•2014•References: 3

Written in the beginning of December 2013, this article was inspired by two events that temporarily coincided: the massive manifestations in Kiyv’s Maidan Square, called ‘Euromaidan’ and the release of Pussy Riot from prison in Russia. Asking myself if those two events were pure coincidence, or if there were a certain political or at least media causality between the two, I try to analyse both processes (Euromaidan media representation and Pussy …
