  • HIV-related stigma and its association with CD4 counts and virological control among people living with HIV in Peru

    Alfredo Chiappe-Gonzalez, Gonzalo Cornejo-Venegas et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2025

HIV-related stigma remains a significant challenge for people living with HIV (PLWH), particularly in developing countries such as Peru, where access to healthcare may be limited. This study examined how external stigma, including disclosure concerns, public attitudes and internal stigma, such as negative self-image affect social disparities, mental health, and clinical outcomes in PLWH. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 407 adults under…

  • Correlates of viral suppression among HIV-infected men who have sex with men and transgender women in Lima, Peru

Katherine M Rich, Javier Valencia Huamani et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

In Peru, HIV is concentrated among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). Between June 2015 and August 2016, 591 HIV-positive MSM and TGW were recruited at five clinical care sites in Lima, Peru. We found that 82.4% of the participants had achieved viral suppression (VS; VL < 200) and 73.6% had achieved maximal viral suppression (MVS; VL < 50). Multivariable modeling indicated that patients reporting transportation as a barr…

  • Elevada frecuencia de dislipidemia en pacientes infectados por VIH en un hospital público peruano

    Open Access•Paola L Rondán, Oscar Flores-Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Peruana de Medicina…•2017

The objective of the study was to determine the frequency and characteristics of dyslipidemia in patients with HIV in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in a Peruvian public hospital. A cross-sectional study was carried out in patients with complete lipid profile after receiving at least six months of HAART. Dyslipidemia was defined according to the criteria of the NCEP-ATP III. We reviewed 2 975 clinical histories, and included 538 (18…

There is little information on the presence of the Mycobacterium avium-Intracellulare (MAC) complex in Peru. Five cases of MAC infection are described in patients with HIV/AIDS at the National Hospital Dos de Mayo, Lima - Peru. The patients presented, mainly, persistent fever, chronic diarrhea, consumptive syndrome, pancytopenia and citofagocitosis. In all of them, resistant acid-alcohol bacilli were identified in feces, so they received antitube…

  • Diarrea recurrente por Cystoisopora belli en pacientes con infección por VIH con Targa

Open Access•Raúl Montalvo, Eduardo Ticona et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Peruana de Medicina…•2014

The Cystoisospora belli, before denominated as Isospora belli, is the etiologic agent of cystoisosoporiasis, an opportunistic infection affecting immunocompromised patients, characterized by chronic diarrhea and weight loss. The incidence of chronic diarrhea for this agent, in HIV patients, has decreased considerably. This thanks to the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which has improved the patient's immune response and de…
