The Impact of Active Learning on Student Course Performance in STEM Varies by Type and Intensity: A Meta-Analysis
Active learning in undergraduate STEM courses boosts student achievement and narrows gaps for underrepresented students compared to traditional lecturing. This meta-analysis aims to further understand the role of active learning practices by interrogating features of the classroom context (e.g., introductory vs. upper-level courses, class size, and discipline) and active learning practices (e.g., type and intensity of active learning) that are co…
Integrating the Mindset Model to Enhance Nursing Student Achievement in Competency-Based Education
BACKGROUND: Incorporating a growth mindset model in competency-based education (CBE) through supportive language, role modeling, and consistent coaching enables faculty to create a learning environment that values effort and normalizes an iterative learning process. Perempuan Adat dan Kemiskinan: Pengalaman, Dilema, dan Tantangan dalam Penelitian Etnografi
This article stems from my experience of conducting ethnography on indigenous Dayak Benawan women in West Kalimantan for approximately two years. Documenting the experiences and knowledge of indigenous Dayak Benawan women was a challenge for me as a researcher, a man, and part of the Dayak Benawan people. Reflection on field data reveals that indigenous women of Dayak Benawan experience multiple oppressions of poverty, starting from the family sy…
Differential effects of the lockdown on labour market outcomes. Evidence for an emerging economy
COVID-19 created a market reconfiguration scenario: the match between supply and demand was disrupted due to social distancing measures. This investigation provides empirical evidence on the impacts of the pandemic on unemployment, wages, hours worked, and recent unemployment in an emerging economy like Colombia. The pandemic does not substantially amplify the negative / regrettable variation of the variables as it is due to a structural problem.…
Understanding and assessing uncertainty of observational climate datasets for model evaluation using ensembles
In climate science, observational gridded climate datasets that are based on in situ measurements serve as evidence for scientific claims and they are used to both calibrate and evaluate models. However, datasets only represent selected aspects of the real world, so when they are used for a specific purpose they can be a source of uncertainty. Here, we present a framework for understanding this uncertainty of observational datasets which distingu…
A World on the Move: Migration, Mobilities and Social Work
Across the world, people are on the move—international students, highly skilled workers, economic migrants, retirees, refugees, nomads, those within global care chains and those whose unauthorised status leave them vulnerable to all sorts of human rights violations, including slavery. Even the term ‘migration’ now seems inadequate to describe the movement of people across the world as twenty-first-century communication technologies, transportatio…

A Short History of Cahiers du cinema
Nothing serious by or about Cahiers has been published in English since Jim Hillier's well presented and annotated choice of articles from the 1950s, followed by a more ponderous selection from the period 1961–68.1 So it is useful to have Emilie Bickerton's narrative and polemical account, even if there is something quixotic about attempting a short version of such a complicated and interesting story, without a bibliography, and with proofreading…
Emergent Literacy of Deaf Children
This article reviews the literature on emergent literacy in young deaf children, focusing on the nature and course of both emergent reading and emergent writing. Beginning with definitions and background information concerning emergent literacy as a field of study, it examines instructional approaches that support emergent literacy learning. The review of the literature is organized into four major sections that reflect the body of work to date. …

Monitoring, classification, and characterization of interior Alaska forests using Airsar and ERS-1 SAR
At the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest (BCEF), past ecological research has been directed at forest successional processes on the floodplain of the Tanana River and adjacent uplands. Research at the Bonanza Creek site continues on the mosaic of forests, shrublands, and wetlands in a wide variety of successional stages on the Tanana floodplain. This paper reviews research since 1988 into the capabilities of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for mon…

Two successive outbreaks of Clostridium perfringens at a state correctional institution
An outbreak of acute gastrointestinal illness of short duration involving 100 inmates at a correctional institution followed a similar outbreak among the same population by eight days. Clostridium perfringens was the specific etiology in both outbreaks; the vehicle was roast beef in the first outbreak, ham in the second. Direct observation of food handling practices revealed that the meats were not cooled quickly enough following cooking; not reh…
