Background: In June 2022, a case of non-bacillary pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) was reported in a 10-year-old girl attending a primary school in Barcelona. A second pediatric case from the same school was identified in October 2022, prompting the declaration of a TB outbreak and the initiation of an epidemiological investigation. • Tuberculosis household contact tracing in children

Open Access•Raquel Prieto-García, Joan Pau Millet et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Children under 15 years of age living in the household of a tuberculosis case constitute a very vulnerable group to tuberculosis infection (TBI). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of TBI and the risk factors associated with presenting TBI in this group, considering sex, age, and migratory status as axes of inequality. A population-based, analytical, cross-sectional observational study was carried out in the city of Barce…

  • Sexually transmitted infections in adolescents in Spain

Open Access•Arantxa Berzosa, María Espiau et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a public health problem worldwide. The Spanish incidence of STIs in adolescents has doubled. We present a multicentre study performed between 2016 and 2022 in Spain that describes the characteristics of STIs among individuals under 19 years. We found 267 STIs in 218 adolescents, with a median age of 17 years. Noticeably, the majority (57.8%) attended an emergency room because of symptoms (67.43%) (mainly…

  • Neurological Short-Term Outcomes of a Cohort of Children Born to Zika Virus-Infected Mothers in Barcelona

Open Access•Natàlia Romaní, Maria Pieras et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a vector-borne flavivirus with a known teratogenic effect, yet the full spectrum has not been delineated. Studies on endemic areas tried to characterize the clinical outcomes of ZIKV intrauterine exposure. We aimed to describe early neurodevelopmental outcomes on prenatally ZIKV-exposed children in a non-endemic ZIKV area. This is a prospective observational cohort study conducted from May 2016 to December 2021 at Hospital Un…
