Room to Manoeuvre: Moving Beyond the Grotesque in Tierno Monénembo's Convivial Space
This article engages with Achille Mbembe's notion of the grotesque in two novels by Guinean author Tierno Monénembo: Les Crapauds-brousse (Paris: Seuil, 1979) and Les Écailles du ciel (Paris: Seuil, 1986). The article argues that Monénembo's aesthetics of mutedness and instability constitute a double dismantling of the dictator's staged power in these fictional worlds through reducing the presence of the dictator figure and accentuating the evide…
Rwanda Since 1994: Stories of Change
Over the past 25 years, Rwanda has undergone remarkable shifts and transitions: culturally, economically, and educationally the country has gone from strength to strength. While much scholarship has understandably been retrospective, seeking to understand, document and commemorate the Genocide against the Tutsi, this volume gathers diverse perspectives on the changing social and cultural fabric of Rwanda since 1994. Rwandan Since 1994 considers t…
The movers of the text: Monénembo's nomad subjects
Transnational African author Tierno Monénembo is known for his unstable narratives and travelling storytellers. In this article I will discuss two of his novels,Pelourinho(1995) andLes Coqs cubains chantent à minuit(2015). Drawing on nomadic thought, the article will argue that Monénembo's lesser-seen subjects are figures of mobiledébrouillardisewho embody and play out a collective nomadic thinking with which they mediate unstable space. Translat…
Fictions of African Dictatorship: Postcolonial Power Across Genres
Fictions of African Dictatorship examines the fictional representation of the African dictator and the performance of dictatorship across genres. The volume includes contributions focusing on literature, theatre and film, all of which examine the relationship between the fictional and the political. Among the questions the contributors ask: what are the implications of reading a novel for its historical content or accuracy? How does the dictator …
A Place for Individuals: Positive Growth in Rwanda
This article introduces the Rwandan Stories of Change research project, and uses data collected jointly with the Aegis Trust to argue for the value of in-depth studies on individual Rwandans’ positive growth. It seeks to explore the place of individual growth in discussions of post-genocide Rwanda by examining the communitarian culture and policies of present day Rwanda. The article uses discourse analysis of a sample of testimonies to analyse in…
