Spatial Politics of Encounter: Erenler Coffeehouse and the Making of an Inclusive Public Sphere in 1980s Istanbul
This study examines how an inclusive public sphere was constructed at Erenler , a literary coffeehouse in 1980s Istanbul, amid Turkey's post‐coup authoritarian climate and deepening ideological fragmentation. In the aftermath of the military coup, a period marked by traumatic depoliticization and the suppression of public sphere, Erenler emerged as a vital contact zone for literati from disparate ideological backgrounds. Adopting a qualitative ca…

Need frustration in online video games
Self-determination theory posits that satisfaction of basic psychological needs is essential for well-being. Empirical evidence for the distinction between need frustration and need satisfaction has been growing within the last decade. Low Trait Self‐Control Predicts Self‐Handicapping
Past research has shown that self‐handicapping stems from uncertainty about one's ability and self‐presentational concerns. The present studies suggest that low dispositional self‐control is also associated with self‐handicapping. In 3 studies ( N = 289), the association between self‐control and self‐handicapping was tested. Self‐control was operationalized as trait self‐control, whereas self‐handicapping was operationalized as trait self‐handica…
The reciprocal cycle of self‐concealment and trust in romantic relationships
We propose that perceived partner concealment, self‐concealment from one's partner (i.e., keeping secrets from one's partner), and trust in one's partner form a reciprocal cycle in romantic relationships. In Study 1, participants in a romantic relationship (N = 94) completed a two‐time point survey within a span of 8 to 10 weeks. Results revealed that perceived partner concealment was associated with a loss of trust in partner, and low trust in p…
Need satisfaction and catastrophizing: Explaining the relationship among emotional ambivalence, pain, and depressive symptoms
Recent literature has revealed the associations among ambivalence over emotional expression (AEE), pain, and depressive symptoms. However, few studies have examined factors explaining these associations. The goal of the study is to examine the potential mediating role of basic needs and pain catastrophizing. In an ethnically diverse undergraduate sample ( N = 255), we found that AEE was positively associated with both depressive symptoms and pain…
A Self-Presentational Approach to Transmission of Good and Bad News
People are reluctant to transmit bad news, a tendency named as the MUM effect. One explanation of this effect suggests that people do not want to construct negative impressions by being associated with bad news. In this study, transmission of good and bad news was examined from an impression management perspective. University students ( N = 275) participated in a scenario study, with the valence of the news (good / bad) and outcome dependence on …
