This article considers the appropriateness of "leadership" as a criterion for evaluating Abraham Lincoln's presidency, particularly his emancipation policy. Lincoln's radical critics applied this criterion and found him wanting. In a sense they were right—Lincoln's policy, I argue, was guided by considerations of a more comprehensive nature
