Food insecurity among international students’ studying in Melbourne, Australia: Experiences and impacts
Food insecurity among international students at Australian universities is a hidden phenomenon obscured by shame and stigma, exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis and deprivations intensified by the Covid-19 epidemic. However, there is limited diversity in understanding of young people’s navigations of food insecurity. The aims of this paper are to illuminate the experiences, impacts, management strategies and factors affecting international s…
Qualified Hope: Young People’s Education and Employment Pathways in Times of Disruption
The pandemic and its aftermath have prompted an extended public and academic conversation about young people, with concerns about the increasing uncertainty of youth employment and education trajectories into the near future. Despite the varying policy approaches surrounding the pandemic, a discourse of concern for a “COVID generation”, allegedly characterized by the complete upending of young people’s futures, has been widely popularized. This i…
Negotiating senses of belonging and identity across education spaces
A multitude of educational programs attempt to facilitate young people’s engagement with ideas and practices of active citizenship. For young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander or Indigenous people in Australia, such interventions are often subject to complex experiences of senses of belonging and non-belonging. This paper responds to calls from researchers to develop better understandings of young Indigenous people’s own senses and practices …
About them, without them? figures of youth in Australian policy 2014–2021
This paper considers the multiple and contradictory depictions of young people in youth policy and reflects on how youth engagement is constructed in Australian Federal and State policy. In this journal, researchers have been challenged to critically reflect on 'figures of youth' (Threadgold, 2020) and we take up this challenge and consider how and why 'figures of youth' are deployed in Australian youth policy. Drawing on an environmental scan of…
In their own words: 41 Stories of Young People’s Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship and cyber safety are often used interchangeably in the context of young people’s internet use, depicting the young person as passive, vulnerable and in need of adult intervention to navigate an unsafe online environment and perpetuating reductive and deterministic initiatives that rarely respond to young people’s own online perspectives and experiences. This discussion maps recent definitions and debates about digital citizens…
Constructing ‘Micro-territories of the local’: Young people making place in regional Australia
Places outside the city have continuously been characterised by received knowledge about decline, youth outmigration, lifestyle discourses and a lack of opportunities for young people. This paper argues that greater clarification of young people’s place-making practices counteracts received knowledge about the decline of the regions, discourses about the ‘idyllic’ communities and lack of access commonly understood to impact young people beyond th…
Understanding the Lived Experiences of Housing and Transport Stress in the “Affordable” Outer Ring: A Case Study of Melbourne, Australia
Australia’s large cities have some of the least affordable housing markets in the world. Australian home buyers are increasingly trading accessibility for affordability in the suburban fringe. This paper presents data collected in 73 qualitative interviews conducted across three strategically selected outer-ring suburbs in Melbourne, Australia. The findings illustrate how the combined impacts of housing and transportation costs are experienced in…
Making place beyond the city through the lens of digital media: Culturally diverse young people negotiating social change in a rural city
Understandings of digital technologies as tools to manage deficit, or conversely as mediators of harm, are prominent for young people in migrant communities negotiating the impacts of geographic isolation. Young people in these contexts emerge at the nexus of several categories of so called ‘disadvantage’ occupying spaces in the geographic and ethnic margins with curtailed independence. This paper provides an opportunity to progress discussions a…
Making place with mobile media: Young people’s blurred place-making in regional Australia
This paper investigates young people living in a regional Australian town and explores the ways that they negotiate place-making using mobile media. Australia has been characterised as a country of vast distances, and young people living in rural and regional areas are at the centre of narratives that position digital technologies as enablers or disruptors. This paper puts such deterministic discourses aside to focus on the ways place is made by …
Rural young people's perspectives on online sociality: Crossing geography and exhibiting self through Facebook
Rural deficit discourses maintain that young people are disadvantaged by the rurality of where they live. Consistent with this is an assumption the Internet will alleviate isolation through its ability to collapse physical and temporal constraints. This article challenges such modes of understanding by privileging young Australian rural people’s voices and perspectives about online social environments. Focusing on the social networking site Faceb…

How to Study Communication: Notes on a Method
Carey's call for a uniquely American form of cultural studies challenged the dominant paradigm of media effects research in the late 1970s. Even today, his work cannot be easily categorized. How then can we replicate his method in order to teach his way of doing scholarship? The discipline of communication has the potential to reveal how the structures of cities, of print, of voice, of digital media, as well as the structure of our ideas all priv…
Notions of Progress
The very idea of progress, or lack of it, indicates something about the role machines can play in one’s life. Notions about how technology can be used—to improve, subvert, destroy, extend, or interrogate—reveal the interplay of human and machine. What notion of progress might adequately capture the complex interdependence of human and machine in a way that illuminates our current predicament? To ask whether specific events make things better or w…
