The Paintings of the Pre-Islamic Ka‘ba
Founded by Oleg Grabar in 1983, Muqarnas is the first academic journal devoted to art, architectural history, archaeology, as well as all aspects of Islamic visual and material cultures, historical and contemporary. Full-length articles are accompanied by shorter submissions grouped under a separate section titled “Notes and Sources,” for which we particularly welcome studies that introduce textual and visual primary sources. Archaeological Fieldwork at the Citadel of Homs, Syria: 1995–1999
The Citadel of Homs is set on one of the largest urban tells of Syria but it has been neglected in terms of its archaeology as it was occupied by the military until recent years. The tell goes back to at least the Early Bronze Age although the present paper focuses primarily on its Islamic fortifications. The extant Islamic walls were built during the Ayyubid period and the Mamluk sultan Baybars subsequently carried out restorations. All of this …

A Nestorian monastic settlement on the island of Ṣīr Banī Yās, Abu Dhabi: A Preliminary Report
Sīr Banī Yās is an island in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi, off the coast from Jabal Dhanna (Zanna) (fig. 1). Much of the landscape of the island has been entirely changed in recent years through earthmoving and landfill although the pre-modern terrain still exists in a few areas. There has also been widespread tree planting, and vast areas of Ṣīr Banī Yas are fenced to protect the plantations from gazelle, great herds of which roam free on the…

Islamic Archaeology in Libya, 1969–1989
In the course of the two decades since 1969, archaeological and architectural investigations relating to the Islamic period in Libya have made sufficient progress for it to be possible now to see the country's Islamic antiquities with a reasonable degree of perspective within Libya and in relation to a broader context. Nevertheless, a great deal of work remains to be done, both with regard to extending the geographical scope of research on Islami…
Islam, iconoclasm, and the declaration of doctrine
The attitude of the early Islamic state towards figurative representations is often cited as a source contributing to the establishment of officially-supported iconoclasm within the Byzantine Empire in A.D. 726. Islam has generally adopted a position opposed to the representational in secular art, and the exclusion of all figurative motifs from Islamic religious art is clear from the first, yet this attitude is not necessarily to be regarded as i…
Notes on Some Mosques in Eastern and Western Saudi Arabia
In studies of Islamic architecture dealing with the earliest periods, a natural emphasis has fallen on the mosques of the Holy Cities of Arabia, the Ḥaramayn, whenever the architecture of the Arabian Peninsula has been discussed. In later periods, extensions and restorations in the Ḥaram in Mecca and the Mosque of the Prophet in al-Madīna have likewise been discussed, but until recent times, little has been said of any other Arabian mosques. As f…
