  • Integration of family planning and nutrition programmes in 64 WHO member states of Africa, Eastern Mediterranean and South-East Asia regions

Open Access•Ikram Shah, Iqbal H Shah et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

BACKGROUND: Family planning (FP) and nutrition services are essential for the health and well-being of girls and women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet evidence on their existing and potential integration is limited. Also, little is known about relevant national programmes and the views of health officials. METHODS: An on-line survey of national health ministry officials in member states of WHO Regions for Africa (AFRO), Eastern M…

  • Opportunities and challenges for integrating family planning and nutrition policies and programmes in Burkina Faso

Open Access•Moussa Ouedraogo, Uttara Partap et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

BACKGROUND: Despite known linkages between family planning (FP) and nutrition, there is little evidence on whether and how these services are integrated for women of reproductive age (WRA; aged 15-49 years) in Burkina Faso. This study aimed to obtain an overview of FP and nutrition policies and programmes in Burkina Faso to understand the value, current efforts, gaps and opportunities for integration. METHODS: In this mixed-methods study, we anal…

  • Opportunities and challenges in integrating family planning and nutrition services in Tanzania

Open Access•Yohana Laiser, Sanjyot Shinde et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

BACKGROUND: Integration of family planning (FP) and nutrition is critical for improving maternal and child health, yet evidence on effective integration remains limited in Tanzania. This study explored challenges and opportunities for integrated service delivery in Tanzania. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was used, combining analysis of the 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (n=15, 254 women), a desk review of 25 national documents, a…

  • Leveraging connections between family planning and nutrition to improve the health of women

Open Access•Uttara Partap, Sanjyot Shinde et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

The global burden of malnutrition and unmet need for family planning (FP) among women of reproductive age remains high. Leveraging the epidemiological and programmatic links between FP and nutrition could help improve outcomes in both domains for women, with wider benefits to health and well-being. Here, we draw on findings from our recently concluded Family Planning and Nutrition Project, which synthesised epidemiological and programmatic linkag…

  • Diet and nutrition status of adult multidrug-resistant tuberculosis cases, household controls, and community controls in Mumbai, India

Open Access•Laxmi Govekar, Sabri Bromage et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

India accounts for the largest national proportion of global multi-drug resistant (MDR-TB) cases and TB mortality. However, evidence on the role of diet and nutrition in MDR-TB infection remains limited. This study aimed to multifacetedly evaluate and compare diet and nutrition status of MDR-TB cases and controls in high TB-burden slum areas of Mumbai. We recruited 352 pulmonary MDR-TB cases receiving domiciliary treatment, household controls, an…

  • Family planning and nutrition

    Open Access•Ilana R Cliffer, Cara A Yelverton et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Contraceptive use may affect women's nutritional status through birth spacing, parity, age at first birth, menstruation changes, and increased income. To inform the integration of family planning with nutrition interventions, we synthesised evidence linking the use of family planning to nutritional outcomes in women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and adolescents (10-19 years) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: …

  • Perspectives on integrating family planning and nutrition

Open Access•Sanjyot Shinde, Uttara Partap et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

BACKGROUND: Limited information is available on the value of integrating family planning and nutrition services to improve related outcomes among women of reproductive age and effective approaches to achieve this. This study aimed to ascertain the perspectives and experiences of global and regional stakeholders about integrating family planning and nutrition services, examine facilitators and barriers and identify opportunities and considerations…

  • Integrating family planning with nutrition and other sexual and reproductive health services in low-income and middle-income countries

Open Access•Sanjyot Shinde, Cara A Yelverton et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Integrating family planning with nutrition could address unmet family planning needs and malnutrition in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Integrating family planning with sexual reproductive health (SRH) services may provide valuable insights as well. This scoping review synthesised evidence from published and grey literature on interventions integrating family planning with nutrition or SRH services in LMICs. METHODS…

  • Nutrition and reproductive potential of women in low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•Dongqing Wang, Christine H Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition plays a critical role in key physiological processes related to reproduction. However, there is limited understanding of the impact of nutritional factors and interventions on the reproductive outcomes of women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesise evidence regarding the impact of nutritional factors and interventions on the reproductive outcomes …

  • Gestational weight gain at the national, regional, and income group levels based on 234 national household surveys from 70 low-income and middle-income countries

Open Access•Janaína Calu Costa, Dongqing Wang et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Gestational weight gain (GWG) estimates enable the identification of populations of women at risk for adverse outcomes. We described GWG distribution in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Demographic and Health Surveys and other national surveys were used to calculate the average GWG by regressing the weight of pregnant women (15–49 years) at the time of the interview on their gestational age, adjusting for sociodemographic factors. A mixe…

  • Burden and determinants of anaemia among in‐school young adolescents in Ethiopia, Sudan and Tanzania

Open Access•Uttara Partap, Amare Worku Tadesse et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2023

Anaemia among adolescents is a global health problem. However, evidence regarding its burden and risk factors, particularly for younger adolescents and in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), remains scarce. We aimed to assess the prevalence and potential determinants of anaemia among urban and semi-urban in-school young adolescents in Ethiopia, Sudan and Tanzania. We conducted a school-based survey among 3558 adolescents aged 10-14 years. A capillary blood…

  • The influence of depressive symptoms and school-going status on risky behaviors

Open Access•Uttara Partap, Nega Assefa et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Our findings reinforce the need for a greater focus on risky behaviors among adolescents in SSA. Addressing depressive symptoms among adolescents, facilitating school attendance and using schools as platforms to improve health may help reduce risky behaviors in this population. Further research is also required to better assess the potential bidirectionality of associations
