  • Slips of the Tongue

    Open Access•Ben Parson, Bas Jongenelen•ARTICLE•Fabula•2023

This article considers the popular storytelling device of the misdirected kiss , classified in Stith Thompson’s index as motif K1225 . It argues that the dominance of Chaucer’s Miller’s Tale over current scholarship has led us to conceptualise the motif in unduly reductive terms. To demonstrate the variability and complexity of the kiss as a narrative element, a number of neglected witnesses are reviewed from medieval and early modern French, Eng…

  • Many Tongues He Must Acquire

    Ben Parson, Bas Jongenelen•ARTICLE•Dutch Crossing•2017

The Bruges rederijker Anthonis de Roovere has long been acknowledged as one the most important poets of the late fifteenth century. He is not only a key figure in the development of Dutch-language poetry and drama, as his work did much to formalise the characteristic poetics of the rederijkerskamers, but he attained an impressive level of recognition within his own lifetime. This article focuses on an aspect of his achievements that is often over…

  • The Sermon on Saint Nobody

Ben Parson, Bas Jongenelen•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2010•References: 5

During the medieval and early modern periods, the mock sermon was one of the most widely staged festive rituals. There are records of its performance in most European countries and cultures. But despite its clear popularity in England, few of these texts are extant in English. Fewer still have been translated in their entirety. To remedy this situation, we provide here a translation of the sixteenthcentury Dutch poem Spotsermoen over Sint Niemand…

  • Better than a sack full of Latin

Bas Jongenelen, Ben Parson•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2009

This article offers the first substantial survey of the Middle Dutch satire Dit es de Frenesie since the work of C.P. Serrure in the mid nineteenth century. It contests much of the conventional wisdom surrounding De Frenesie, challenging the poem's usual classification as an early boerde or fabliau. Instead it is argued that the text is an experimental work, which blends together elements of several satiric traditions without committing itself to…

  • The verses of Mariken van Nieumeghen (Anonymous, C. 1515)

    Bas Jongenelen, Ben Parson•ARTICLE•Dutch Crossing•2008

Mariken van Nieumeghen is one of the best known plays in Dutch literary history, but has found little fame outside the Netherlands. Although an early modern English translation does exist, this was evidently based on a lost prose version. The original play contains numerous verse-passages. There are four self-contained poems in these sections: two rondelen, a sonnet and a refereyn. This article present the first translations of these poems into m…

  • A Play of Three Suitors

    Ben Parson, Bas Jongenelen•ARTICLE•Folklore•2008

The wide diffusion of the "Entrapped Suitors" story-type has often been observed: examples are found in a remarkable number of literatures, ranging from English, French and Greek in the West, to Persian, Arabic and Kashmiri in the East. However, a text of this type that is often overlooked is the Middle Dutch play Een Speel Van Drie Minners ("A Play of Three Suitors"). This is despite the fact that it represents a highly idiosyncratic variation o…

  • A Famous and Most Miraculous Prophecy

Bas Jongenelen, Ben Parson•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2008•Cited by: 2

Een schoone ende wonderlijcke prognosticatie (1560) is one of many Dutch texts dealing with the trickster Till Eulenspiegel, known as "Tijl Uilenspiegel" in the Low Countries and "Owlglass" in England. The poem differs from most Eulenspiegel literature in two key respects. First, it treats the figure as a narrator rather than a character, and second, it seems designed for performance rather than simple recital. We offer here an English translatio…

  • The Influence ofLe chevalier délibéréon Late Medieval Dutch Literature

    Bas Jongenelen•ARTICLE•Dutch Crossing•2005

Le chevalier délibéré by Olivier de la Marche is now largely forgotten. Immediately after its publication in 1483, however, it enjoyed great success. The text was disseminated throughout Europe and was held in particularly high esteem in the French-speaking parts of the Netherlands. Such was its popularity in this region that it came to have a profound effect on Dutch literature. The text was translated twice into Dutch, by Pieter Willemsz in 149…
