  • Early-evening indoor and outdoor foraging by major malaria vectors in Nchelenge, Zambia

    Open Access•Mary E Gebhardt, Hannah L Markle et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Despite a decade of indoor residual spraying, malaria remains holoendemic in Nchelenge District in northern Zambia. This study examined the hypothesis that the intransigence of malaria in Nchelenge District is due in part to early evening and outdoor foraging of local anopheline species. Three replicate collections were performed at 24 households using CDC light traps over 6 weeks during the dry season of 2019. Traps were set indoors, in animal p…

  • Malaria in their words

Open Access•Shuai Zhang, Sirey H Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2025

While the public health impacts of malaria in endemic regions of Africa are well documented, the profound personal and socioeconomic impacts remain insufficiently explored in broader discourse. Qualitative studies of lived experiences can illuminate these dimensions, humanizing malaria’s toll and informing more contextually grounded social and behavioral change interventions. We explored malaria-related narratives from GiveDirectly’s online repos…

  • Impact of maternal death reviews at a rural hospital in Zambia

Open Access•Jean-Bertin Bukasa Kabuya, Arthur Mataka et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2020

Implementation of MDR was accompanied by a significant decrease in maternal mortality with reductions in maternal death from puerperal sepsis and uterine rupture, but not postpartum hemorrhage. Qualitative analysis of audit reports identified several modifiable risk factors within four core areas. Comparisons of potential explanatory factors did not show any differences over time. These results imply that MDR offers a means for hospitals to curta…

  • Impact of substandard and falsified antimalarials in Zambia

    Open Access•Kathryn D Jackson, Colleen R Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Eliminating substandard and falsified antimalarials is an important step towards a malaria-free Zambia. Beyond the dissemination of insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, and other malaria control measures, attention must also be paid to assure the quality of antimalarial treatments

  • Expectations of health care quality among rural Maya villagers in Sololá Department, Guatemala

Open Access•Matthew M Ippolito, Matthew Ippolito et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2017

In a rural Maya community in Guatemala, operational and quality-based factors, independent of sociocultural considerations, informed the perception of and decision to access biomedical resources. Interventions that address these factors may increase health care utilization and alleviate some of the health disparities that accompany indigeneity in Guatemala and similar contexts

  • Food insecurity and diabetes self-management among food pantry clients

    Open Access•Matthew M Ippolito, Courtney R Lyles et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective To examine the association between level of food security and diabetes self-management among food pantry clients, which is largely not possible using clinic-based sampling methods. Design Cross-sectional descriptive study. Setting Community-based food pantries in California, Ohio and Texas, USA, from March 2012 through March 2014. Subjects Convenience sample of adults with diabetes queuing at pantries ( n 1237; 83 % response). Sampled a…
