The Aesthetics and/or Politics of Neoconcretism: The Case of Ferreira Gullar
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Brazilian poet Ferreira Gullar pursued a project he named “neoconcretism” — a project apparently distinct from his preceding and subsequent poetry, and bookended by the explosive economic success of developmental populism, at its beginning, and Brazil's 1964 military coup, at its end. What is the relation of Gullar’s neoconcrete period to Brazilian history? What is at stake, aesthetically, in Gullar’s poetic…
Examina,…
Rapid Coastal zone Survey and Beyond: Research and management of the Essex coast, UK
Recent survey around the Essex coast has built on the work of the pioneering Hullbridge Survey of the 1980s, extending its coverage both geographically and chronologically. New fieldwork has examined areas not previously surveyed, and has concentrated on Roman, medieval and post-medieval sites and features, rather than the prehistoric landsurface and associated deposits which formed the focus of the Hullbridge work. At the same time, monitoring w…
Excavations at a Neolithic Cursus, Springfield, Essex, 1979–85
A long cropmark enclosure at Springfield, Essex, interpreted as a Neolithic cursus, was investigated betwee 1979–85 to confirm its date and establish a site sequence. The enclosure was c. 690 m long and 37–49 m wide the ditch being uninterrupted in all areas examined, features within the interior at the eastern end included a incomplete ring of substantial post-pits which it is suggested originally formed a complete circle. Peterborou pottery, pr…

Excavation of a Possible Neolithic Long Barrow or Mortuary Enclosure at Rivenhall, Essex, 1986
Aerial survey in Essex has revealed a number of elongated enclosures interpreted as either long barrows or mortuary enclosures of Neolithic date. Excavation of one of these sites at Rivenhall in 1986 produced finds of flintwork and pottery which help to substantiate this hypothesis. A surface collection survey of the field containing the enclosure produced Mesolithic and Neolithic flintwork. A short discussion considers the Essex sites in their w…
A Late Bronze Age Enclosure at Lofts Farm, Essex
A double-ditched sub-rectangular enclosure measuring c.42 by 48 m was excavated. It was shown to have been a Late Bronze Age settlement, with a single central roundhouse opposite the only entrance, and with a rectangular structure in one corner. The site produced a typical range of Late Bronze Age artefacts. The site is low-lying, and environmental data from the waterlogged fills of a well indicate an open landscape of damp grassland. These facto…
Late bronze age hoards from the Chelmer valley, Essex
Details of a recently discovered Ewart Park phase hoard from Boreham, Essex are reported. The opportunity is also taken to publish Late Bronze Age metal finds from Boreham, together with a hoard discovered in the nineteenth century at Little Baddow. These finds are viewed in the light of recent fieldwork and previous finds in the Chelmer Valley
