The Poetry of Nizami Ganjavi: Knowledge, Love, and Rhetoric
The work of Nizami Ganjavi, a classical poet of the twelfth century, is fueling new cultural debate in Iran in recent years. The dominant discourse encourages the reading of the texts in light of biog

The Uses of Guile in the Shāhnāmah
The ShĀhnĀmah Provides an Obvious Starting Point for an Examination of the role of guile in Persian literature. It is the earliest major work in which male and female characters both play significant roles, and in many of its stories guile, by which I mean the whole range of dishonest or deceitful behavior, plays a central role. Rethinking the stories in the Shāhnāmah from this perspective leads to several general conclusions. First, guile is a p…
Rereading the Past: Poor Esfandiyar! An Excerpt from Bichareh Esfandiyar
The Esfandiyar of the title is the hero of a cycle of stories in the Iranian national epic, the Shahnameh of Abolqasem Ferdowsi, and Bichareh Esfandiyar is Sacidi Sirjani's lengthy and impassioned interpretation of that cycle. The book has the form of lecture notes. That is, the author retells the story of Esfandiyar from the Shahnameh of Ferdowsi, paraphrasing it at times, quoting from it at others, and commenting on the events and personalities…

Madness and Cure in the 1001 Nights
The stories of the Thousand and One Nights appear on first encounter to appeal principally through their exotic, fantastic and sensational features. And, indeed, they are filled with kings and caliphs and all the panoply of court life, with enormous and terrifying jinns, with magicians both good and evil, and of both sexes, and with adventures that are by turns horrible, wonderful, bloody and sublime. Yet the collection opens with the instruction…

The Wedding
Gholamhoseyn Sa'edi, also known by his pen name Gowhar Morad, is one of the two or three most prominent writers of prose fiction in Iran today. His first published work appeared in 1956, and since then he has published some twenty volumes of short stories and plays, and several monographic studies of rural Iranian communities. Initially trained as a physician, Dr. Sa'edi has for some years now devoted himself almost wholly to writing. Most recent…

The Chronograms of Khaqani
As with the majority of great national figures of the Middle Ages, we know relatively little about the facts, and, in particular, about the dates of the life of the major Persian language poet of the twelfth century, ode-writer to the Shirvānshāhs, son of a carpenter of Shirvān, Afẓāl al-dīn Ibrāhīm Khāqānī. A brief sketch of the biographical information concerning the poet, which was compiled from oriental sources by N. Khanikoff almost a centur…
On the Feasibility of an Automated Bibliography of Iranian Studies
To state that the bibliography of Iranian studies is accumulating at an alarming rate is perhaps to belabor the obvious. It is an impression most students of the field will share. The project described in the following few pages was undertaken in part to explore this impression, and to test a solution to the problem implicit in it. Whatever small part impressionism may have thus played in its conceptual phase, the project's findings are strictly …
