American Government 3e
American Government 3e aligns with the topics and objectives of many government courses. Faculty involved in the project have endeavored to make government workings, issues, debates, and impacts meaningful and memorable to students while maintaining the conceptual coverage and rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from the fundament…

David Silkenat. Driven from Home: North Carolina’s Civil War Refugee Crisis
At a time when Americans debate the fate of refugees fleeing military conflict around the world, it is well to remember that during the Civil War, many civilians in the Confederacy sought refuge elsewhere in response to military operations. In his careful study Driven from Home, David Silkenat explores the many layers of refugee activity in North Carolina, where rich and poor, white and black, Confederate and Unionist, scrambled across the state …

Hidden Paths from Morality to Cooperation: Moral Judgments Promote Trust and Trustworthiness
Classic sociological solutions to cooperation problems were rooted in the moral judgments group members make about one another’s behaviors, but more recent research on prosocial behaviors has largely ignored this foundational work. Here, we extend theoretical accounts of the social effect of moral judgments. Where scholars have emphasized the roles of moral judgments in clarifying moral boundaries and punishing deviants, we present two less intui…
Do Descriptive Norms Solve Social Dilemmas? Conformity and Contributions in Collective Action Groups
Collective action researchers have focused on injunctive norms that specify approved behavior as a panacea for collective action problems. We investigate whether descriptive norms (similar behavior) can also solve these problems. We argue that descriptive norms generate social identification, which then sustains conformity to expectations. Consequently, descriptive norms can characterize both cooperation and noncooperation, such that cooperative …

The Great Task Remaining before Us: Reconstruction as America's Continuing Civil War
At a time when Americans are reflecting on the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, we would do well to remember that the end of that war did not bring peace or resolution. This volume's primary theme is the continuity between the war and Reconstruction: the latter period did much to define more precisely what was achieved by the former. Most of the essays address the theme of continuity from the local level; with one exception, they treat life in …

Are Blacks Really Less Trusting than Whites? Revisiting the Race and Trust Question
Many scholars have concluded that blacks are less trusting than whites. The research presented here calls that conclusion into question. Previous research has been based on the standard trust measure, which may not be well suited to understanding how trust varies with social categories such as race. Building on theories of self-categorization and social identity, we argue that blacks are not less trusting than whites as suggested in previous work…

The Poverty of Trust in the Southern United States
This paper bridges two lines of research. One line shows that social relations in the southern United States are more "collectivist" than social relations in non-southern regions. The second line of work argues that collectivist social relations generate lower levels of general trust than individualist social relations. At the intersection of these two arguments is the prediction that Southerners are, on average, less trusting than non-Southerner…
Power, Identity, and Collective Action in Social Exchange
Our research aims to bring collective action back into the study of structural determinants of power in social exchange. Previous research has focused primarily on the bargaining power of actors whose locations in exchange networks confer different risks of exclusion. We argue that structural position affects not only bargaining power but also the ability of low-power actors to organize against unequal bargaining power. We hypothesize that collec…
Sex, Fear, and Greed: A Social Dilemma Analysis of Gender and Cooperation
Results from previous studies have led many researchers to conclude that sex has no effect on cooperation in social dilemmas. This article reconciles strong theoretical expectations of sex differences in cooperation with the dearth of empirical evidence for such differences. I show that several theories of sex- or gender-related behavior suggest we should expect males and females to respond more strongly to greed and fear, respectively, in social…

The Making of Robert E. Lee
Two biographical studies could scarcely present a greater contrast in approaches than The Making of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant do. Brooks D. Simpson's Grant, while making ample use of quotations from its protagonist, nevertheless approaches him from outside, with Simpson a spectator observing his growth as a soldier and in personal character. Michael Fellman's Lee is not strictly speaking a biography, but rather an analysis of the mind an…
Jefferson Davis, American
Jefferson Davis remains something of a confusing figure to most Americans. Seemingly cold and distant, the president of the Confederacy earnestly believed in the cause of Southern independence; his rigid, disputatious, and fault-finding personality, however, did not enhance the prospects for Confederate success and detracted from his character as a principled and steadfast man. It does not help that many Americans venerate his Union counterpart o…

Sherman's Civil War: Selected Correspondence of William T. Sherman, 1860-1865
Arranged chronologically and grouped into chapters that correspond to significant phases in Sherman's life, the letters - many of which have never before been published - reveal Sherman's thoughts on politics, military operations, slavery and emancipation, the South, and daily life in the Union army, as well as his reactions to such important figures as General Ulysses S. Grant and President Lincoln. Lively, frank, opinionated, discerning, and oc…

The Presidency of Martin Van Buren
Martin Van Buren, eighth president of the United States, has been judged harshly by some historians as a politician by trade and a spoilsman without principles, a little magician who was interested only in his own advancement. Grant went to war in 1861 to save the Union—and nothing more—in what he predicted would be a short conflict. By 1863, after two years of bloody struggle against a stubborn enemy, Grant came to understand that a war to preserve the Union must of necessity transform that Union. Why the Cause Lost
Over the last decade Civil War history has enjoyed a surprising and robust revival. Volumes on the war crowd bookstore shelves; Ken Burns and his coterie of scholars have offered a compelling if controversial interpretation of the war on PBS; James M. McPherson comes into our living rooms over television to promote American Heritage. Aside from some recent unseemly squabbling over the merits and motivation of the new western history, the most col…
