Evaluating the Effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on HIV Testing, Enrollment, ART Use and Mortality in Suriname Using Interrupted Time Series Analysis
Our study evaluates the changes in HIV testing, new enrollments in the HIV surveillance system, treatment, and mortality of people with HIV during and after the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic in Suriname. A retrospective population-based study was conducted, using interrupted time series analyses with data from the HIV surveillance system from January 2013 until December 2023. The commencement of the COVID-19 pandemic lead to a decline in HIV tes…
Is malaria elimination in the Amazon rainforest feasible? The case of Suriname
This opinion paper summarizes the strategy applied toward malaria elimination in Suriname and highlights its relevance and feasibility for implementation in similar Amazon rainforest settings. The country implemented a strategy in both stable and nonstable communities, which included robust surveillance, maximizing access to early diagnosis and treatment, retreatment strategies, and ample distribution of insecticide-treated nets. Decades of susta…
HIV prevalence among cervical (pre)cancer diagnoses in Suriname
HIV testing, followed by treatment initiation when found HIV-positive, should be prioritized in women diagnosed with cervical neoplasia. This will enhance the individual clinical outcomes and facilitate the control of the HIV epidemic in Suriname
Evaluating elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Suriname
Objectives. To evaluate the cascade of care for the elimination of mother-to-child-transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Suriname and identify sociodemographic and clinical factors preventing transmission to exposed infants. Methods. A mixed-methods study design was used. Antenatal care data from the 2018 cross-sectional multi-indicator cluster survey on 1 026 women aged 15–49 years who had had a live birth in the previous 2 years…
Archival, paleopathological and aDNA-based techniques in leprosy research and the case of Father Petrus Donders at the Leprosarium ‘Batavia’, Suriname
OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether Petrus Donders (died 1887), a Dutch priest who for 27 years cared for people with leprosy in the leprosarium Batavia, Suriname, had evidence of Mycobacterium (M.) leprae infection. A positive finding of M. leprae ancient (a)DNA would contribute to the origin of leprosy in Suriname. MATERIALS: Skeletal remains of Father Petrus Donders; two additional skeletons excavated from the Batavia cemetery were used as controls…
