  • Towards a typology of loanword integration in Arbëresh

Open Access•Edward Glaser, Elvira Glaser•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2025

Centuries of language contact with Italo-Romance varieties have strongly affected the Italo-Albanian dialects in many respects. The following study focuses on loan words (MAT loans), on the one hand, with regard to their integration into the Italo-Albanian sound system and, on the other hand, with regard to the morphological integration of verbs into the historically given system. As for the sound level, especially geminates and laterals are pron…

  • Bare nouns, indefinite articles and partitivity in an Early New High German cookbook

    Open Access•Edward Glaser•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 16

The starting point of the present article is the usage of mass nouns with indefinite articles, known from modern Bavarian and neighbouring dialects. Our analysis is dedicated to the use of the indefinite article varying with bare nouns in a historical perspective, based on a cookbook handwritten in 1556 in the East Swabian variety of Augsburg, containing about 900 instances of mass nouns with and without articles. Like in modern Bavarian, the rea…

  • Gschmöis – Crowdsourcing grammatical data of Swiss German

Anja Hasse, Sandro Bachmann et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2021

In recent years, a number of applications on Swiss German have been released. They all crowdsource dialectological data, yet until recently their main focus has been on lexical and phonological features. In 2018, we launched the app gschmöis , an app designed to (1) give users an insight into dialectological research, and (2) collect Swiss German data on all linguistic levels, but with a strong emphasis on morphosyntactic phenomena. At the beginn…

  • The Rise and Fall of Partitive Markers in Some Germanic Varieties

Open Access•Thomas Strobel, Edward Glaser et al.•CHAPTER•Disentangling Bare Nouns and…•2020

The purpose of this contribution is a comparative analysis of different “partitive markers” in the noun phrase of several Germanic varieties, with a special focus on areally peripheral non-standard or less standardized West Germanic varieties. Starting with the use of genitive case for the marking of partitive functions in various syntactic contexts in the older stages of German, we then take a closer look at those varieties for which the surviva…

  • Wandel und Variation in der Morphosyntax der schweizerdeutschen Dialekte

    Open Access•Edward Glaser, Elvira Glaser•ARTICLE•Taal en tongval•2014

Syntactic Variation and change in Swiss German dialects The article deals with the areal distribution of morphosyntactic variants in Swiss German dialects. The Zurich project “Syntaktischer Atlas der deutschen Schweiz” (SADS) has provided a lot of evidence for the existence of syntactic isoglosses within the German-speaking regions of Switzerland. In the following, we will discuss several types of variant distribution. There are syntactic variabl…

  • Syntaktische Strategien zum Ausdruck von Indefinitheit und Partitivität im Deutschen (Standardsprache und Dialekt)

    Edward Glaser, Elvira Glaser•CHAPTER•Dialektsyntax•1993

Ausgangspunkt meiner Ausführungen ist ein typologisch bemerkenswertes Phänomen des Neuhochdeutschen. Dadurch wird der Teilbereich von Indefinitheit und Partitivität abgesteckt, der im folgenden behandelt werden soll.
