Navigating re-borderings
Many European border regions are home to national minorities, which were divided from their kinstate through historical bordering processes. European integration has eased connections with the kinstates, especially when the Schengen regime of open borders was implemented. This article scrutinizes how borderland minorities have been coping with re-borderings in times of crisis and how the inclusion of borderland minorities in cross-border regional…

Negotiated belonging in sub-state nationalist contexts
This contribution investigates the intersection between macro-level political narratives on diversity and micro-level lived experience of social inclusion and everyday interaction. The case studies for analysis comprise of two regional sub-state nationalist contexts, Scotland and South Tyrol, Italy. The personal stories reported in this study are a direct challenge to the dominant political narrative that Scotland does not have a racism problem. When faced with this discord between narrative and reality, young adultmigrants in Scotland must negotiate both their own lived experiences and biographical narrativ…

This article traces the discourse‐to‐audience framework through an analysis of the Scottish government's rhetoric on Scottish distinctiveness and its effect on how young migrants see Scotland. In order, we examine how the discourse of Scottish distinctiveness is constructed and conveyed through a close examination of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's public…
Biomedicine in the Twentieth Century
It has become a commonplace among historians of twentieth-century medicine that the examination of the final quarter of the century has not yet been successfully undertaken, or even seriously attempted. It was certainly the case that the recently published encyclopaedic Companion to Medicine in the Twentieth Century, edited by Roger Cooter and John Pickstone (London: Routledge, 2000) was weakest in its treatment of the last three decades. This wa…
The Glasgow Corporation Milk Depot 1904-1910 and its Role in Infant Welfare
The role of nutrition in combating high rates of infant mortality was an important topic in the first decade of the twentieth century. Seeking to mirror the success of the French Consultations de Nourissons and Gouttes de Lait, English municipal depots aimed to provide vulnerable infants with sterilised cow's milk modified to resemble breast milk. This idea was adopted by Glasgow Corporation when it instigated an infant milk depot in 1904. Howeve…
