  • Monastery, Monarchy, and Miter: Making the Most of the Metropolitan’s Martyrdom

    David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2025

Halperin’s, Spock’s, and Kain’s contributions to this volume raise questions concerning: a) the toleration of post-mortem criticism of Ivan IV , and specifically of the murder of Metropolitan Filipp as expressed in the latter’s vita and related writings, given changing circumstances within Solovetskii Monastery; b) Russian crown security needs and policies relative to Ivan IV ’s legacy from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth century; c) P…

  • Satan’s Playground: One Key to the Mindset of Prosvetitel’

    David M Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2023

The concept of Satan in Prosvetitel ’ is that of Orthodox Christianity and the Church Fathers from the era of Ecumenical Councils. Satan is especially prominent in the introductory Skazanie , where he is responsible for the new, soul-destroying (and allegedly judaizing) Novgorod heresy, whose leading proponents are infused with him, and in Slovo 4, where he is responsible for humanity’s initial fall from grace and then is deceptively but appropri…

  • Double Devil’s Advocacy: Were They or Weren’t They? Only Nil Sorskii Knew

    David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Russian History•2021

This scholar’s work on Nil Sorskii and Iosif Volotskii progressed unevenly from adhering to Ia.S. Lur’e’s modification of the traditional Nil vs. Iosif paradigm to a strident assertion of their collaborative alliance promoting monasticism and resolutely opposing dissidence, with a mixture of intersection and compatible differences of emphasis in their original writings. But one must concede the possibility that Nil’s collaboration did not include…

  • Iosif “Syllogistikos”: An Analysis of Prosvetitel’

    David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2020

Iosif Volotskii’s practical and rhetorical mastery of logic was a major factor in its pedagogical and polemical effectiveness. This logic pervades his Prosvetitel’ ( Book against the Novgorod Heretics ) in the structure of each discourse, grouping of the discourses, ordering of subjects and themes within and among the discourses, hypothetical heretical objections and Orthodox refutations, sequencing of proof texts, application of syllogistic lite…

  • Halperin’s Heraclean Feat: Navigating the ‘Reliable Sources’ Challenge en route to Crafting a Book ‘for all Seasons’ and Modifying the ‘Renaissance Prince’ Paradigm

    David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Russian History•2020

Halperin’s extensively researched, methodically logical and thought out, and clearly written, if perforce selective study of Ivan iv and his reign scrupulously devotes attention to the reliability of the available sources. The author’s leitmotif here is that diplomatic papers and chronicles, as well as polemical literature, à la the disputed Ivan iv -Kurbskii epistolary exchange, as well as the History attributed to the latter and also foreigners…

  • Islamic Political Thought in the Earliest German and Slavic Dracula Tales

    David M Goldfrank•CHAPTER•Vlad der Pfähler – Dracula•2017

  • The “Judaic-Reasoning Novgorod Heretics” and Some Echoes of Spain in Late Medieval Russia

    David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Russian History•2017

In October 1490 Archbishop Gennadii of Novgorod sent a report from the Imperial (Holy Roman Empire) envoy of the Spanish Inquisition to the new Metropolitan of Moscow Zosima. This was in the light of the upcoming synod trial of the accused “Judaic-reasoning Novgorod Heretics,” some of whom Gennadii was then empowered to subject to a humiliating auto-da-fé , without, however, any executions. The overall manuscript evidence indicates that Gennadii’…

  • Litigious, Pedagogical, Redemptive, Lethal: Iosif Volotskii's Calculated Insults

    Open Access•David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2016•Cited by: 1

Iosif Volotskii is renowned especially for the political and cultural significance of the monastery he founded and his successful campaign against the accused “Novgorod” or “Judazing” heretics of his day. It is well recognized that his massive influence was due in part to his sharp pen, but no one so far has examined the role of his insults, something no less a figure than Aristotle recognized as a potent rhetorical device. This essay shows how I…

  • The Anatomy of the Key Codices and the Ontogeny of Prosvetitel’

    David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2015

The textual development of Iosif Volotskii’s influential Book against the Novgorod Heretics or Prosvetitel’ remains in dispute. Aleksei Alekseev (2010/2012) has recently challenged Iakov Lur’e’s scheme (1955/1960): from Iosif’s discourses and epistles, to Brief with 11 discourses, to more discourses and epistles, to Extended with 16 discourses. Alekseev proposes instead: Extended with 13 discourses, to both Prosv -11 (this essay’s shorthand) and …

  • Nil’s and Iosif’s Rhetoric of Starchestvo

    David M Goldfrank, David Goldfrank•ARTICLE•Russian History•2012

The ideal master-disciple relationship or starchestvo associated with Paisii Velichkovskii (1722-92) and his epigones rests on a complex monastic legacy stretching back to Christian Antiquity and includes early Russia’s two greatest native writing elders, Nil Sorskii (1433/4-1508) and Iosif Volotskii (1439/40-1515). Pedagogical networks, circulation of texts, structural continuities, and workings of the hierarchy’s nomenklatura system in the 16 t…

Scholarly debate in the West, and to a large extent also in the Soviet Union, concerning the fifteenth and early sixteenth-century Russian monk losif (né Sanin) Volotsky (Joseph Volotsky), 1439-1515, has generally centered on his political ideas and the interpretation of his Prosvetitel' (Enlightener, or Illuminator) . The monastic side of his activities is often played down or neglected, even though the most important aspect of his daily life fo…
