  • Early Islamic History Reimagined

    Nancy Khalek•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2021•References: 1

This article presents a close reading of Ibn ʿAsākir's (d. 571/1176) biography of ʿUmar II in the Tārīkh madīnat Dimashq. Although there was an earlier and substantial historiographical tradition, Ibn ʿAsākir's biography is distinct from those of his predecessors in two major ways. First, he strategically arranged his biography to emphasize or de-emphasize certain aspects of ʿUmar II's life, including his youth, rise to the caliphate, and reputat…

  • Al-Dāraquṭnı̄'s (d. 385 ah ) Faḍā’il al-Ṣaḥāba

    Open Access•Nancy Khalek•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This essay analyses the sole extant chapter of a fourth/tenth-century Faḍā'il al-Ṣaḥaba work by the ḥadı̄th critic and scholar Al-Ḥasan ʿAlı̄ ibn ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad Ibn Mahdı̄ ibn Masʿūd al-Dāraquṭnı̄ (d. 385/995). As scholars have noted, faḍā’il literature beyond the chapters on religious merits of the Companions in the Ṣaḥı̄ḥayn is among a number of sub-genres of tradition-based literature (alongside, for example, targhı̄b wa tarhı̄b ), which tend…

  • Some Notes on the Representation of Non-Muslim Officials in al-Ǧahšiyārī’s (d. 331/942) Kitāb al-Wuzarāʾ wa-l-kuttāb

    Nancy Khalek•ARTICLE•Arabica•2015

Rather than a handbook or chronological history of secretaries and viziers, or a straightforward guide to administrative terminology, the Kitāb al-Wuzarā ʾ wa-l-kuttāb by Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbdūs al-Ǧahšiyārī (d. 331/942) is a collection of ʿAbbāsid-era narratives on the history of early Islamic administration. Related to other works in the genre adab al-kātib , the Kitāb al-Wuzarā ʾ wa-l-kuttāb provides insight into one compiler’s literary techniqu…

  • Jerusalem in Medieval Islamic Tradition

    Open Access•Nancy Khalek•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2011•References: 4

The history of Islamic thought about Jerusalem has been hindered by a lack of comprehensive historical sources on the city in what is traditionally thought of as the Classical period of Islam, from the 6th to the mid-13th centuries. As a result, scholars have relied on geographical works and texts in a genre known as 'Religious Merits' or faḍā' il, as well as apocalyptic and prophetic tradition (ḥadīth) for insight into the role and importance of…
