The Diffusion of the Internet and the Increased Propensity of Teams to Transcend Institutional and National Borders

Wives who outearn their husbands: A transitory or persistent phenomenon for couples
In what percentage of married couples do wives outearn their husbands, and, moreover, how persistent are these patterns? This study systematically examined variation in point-in-time estimates across alternative measures of earnings, definitions of types of couples, and data sources and gauged the persistence of these patterns for a period of three calendar years using data from the 2000 Current Population Survey and the 1996–2000 Survey of Incom…

Beyond single mothers: Cohabitation and marriage in the AFDC program
We investigate the extent and implications of cohabitation and marriage among U.S. welfare recipients. An analysis of four data sets (the Current Population Survey, the National Survey of Families and Households, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth) shows significant numbers of cohabitors among recipients of AFDC. An even more surprising finding is the large number of married women on welfare. We also…

Does AFDC-UP Encourage Two-Parent Families
Effective October 1990, the Family Support Act (FSA) of 1988 extended the previously state-optional AFDC-Unemployed Parent (UP) program to all states. This policy was undertaken in an effort to reduce the two-parent penalty of the AFDC program, but little is actually known about UP and its influence on family structure. This study clarifies what is meant by “two-parent family” in the federal legislation and provides new evidence on AFDC's incenti…
Equal Employment Opportunity: Labor Market Discrimination and Public Policy
Although equal employment opportunity laws are often at the center of political debate, it has been difficult for students, teachers, and concerned citizens to learn about the controversy over EEO. Contributions to our understanding are scattered, this collection of writings is a broad interdisciplinary introduction to the struggle for EEO and its consequences. No other collection brings together articles on theories of dis-criminations; competin…

The Living Arrangements of Single Mothers with Dependent Children: An Added Perspective
Despite the rapid increase in families headed by single mothers, sufficient attention has not been paid to the living arrangements of these families. Most prior research has generally relied on Bureau of the Census definitions as household head and subfamily head to categorize single mothers' living arrangements. This two part grouping, however, obscures the actual diversity of living arrangements undertaken, including cohabitation with unrelated…
The impact of housing costs on the living arrangements of single mothers
Why So Few? Women Academics in Australian Universities
This book had its genesis in the new wave of consciousness about women's position in society and the women's movement of the 1970s. Its aim is to contribute to the interest in and knowledge about Australian women through a study of a group who share the common situation of women in societies based on a sexual division of roles but who work in the particular locus of a university where they are a minority in both number and status
