Christian Monasticism in Late Antique and Early Islamic East Arabia
This paper investigates the rise, expansion and decline of monasteries in East Arabia during the sixth to eighth centuries CE . It considers both literary and archaeological evidence and the similarities and differences between the perspectives that they provide. This brief period of monasticism in East Arabia is evaluated in the context of the increasing influence of East Syrian (Nestorian) Christianity in the late Sasanian empire, the imperial …
Caucasian Elites Between Byzantium and the Caliphate in the Early Islamic Period
Archaeological Survey of Sīnīya Island, Umm al-Quwain
The preliminary results of a comprehensive survey of Sīnīya Island in the Khawr al-Bayḍāʾ of Umm al-Quwain are presented here. The onset of human occupation remains to be confirmed, with scarce evidence for limited activity in the late pre-Islamic period (LPI, c. 300 BC – AD 300). The first major phase of occupation dates to the seventh and eighth centuries (early Islamic period) when a monastery and settlement were established in the north-east …
Agapius of Manbiǧ, Qusṭā ibn Lūqā and the Graeco-Roman Past
This article looks at the routes by which knowledge of the Greco-Roman past was transmitted from late antiquity by Christian communities living under Muslim rule. The process involved translation from Greek to Syriac and from Greek and Syriac to Arabic. Once in Arabic, the lingua franca of the Abbasid Middle East, this historical material could be used by Muslim scholars to work into their histories of the pre-Islamic Middle East. This article al…
Muslims and Others in Early Islamic Society
The interaction between Muslims and the other religious denominations of the Middle East in the period 620-1020 is the subject of this volume. This is arguably the single most important issue in the history of the early Islamic Middle East, since the Muslims were initially a minority in the lands that they had conquered and so had to reach some modus vivendi with the various religious communities in their realm. Fifteen articles by leading schola…

From Albania to Arrān
This volume is the first publication in English to discuss the nature and identity of the polity in the East Caucasus referred to by modern scholars as (Caucasian) Albania. The sporadic and fragmentary character of our sources for this polity means that it is difficult to construct a continuous narrative of its history, and so we offer here studies by leading specialists on particular aspects of it.
Were the Muslim Arab Conquerors of the Seventh-Century Middle East Colonialists
Lev Weitz (2018), Between Christ and Caliph
Seeing Islam as Others Saw It
This seminal work continues to shape the thought of specialists studying the Late Antique crossroads at which Christian, Jewish, Zoroastrian, and Islamic histories met, by offering the field a new approach to the vexing question of how to write the early history of Islam. The new edition of the study produces the original text with the addition of a substantial forward in which Hoyland discusses how the field has developed over the two decades th…

Chapter 1 Kindi and Islamic Swords
Medieval Islamic Swords and Swordmaking
One of the problems pervading the study of medieval Islamic technology is the lack of surviving technical treatises. Tradition tended to be handed down by example and by word of mouth, and apprenticeships could last for decades. Fortunately, however, occasional treatises do exist. The treatise “On swords and their kinds” was written by the 9th century Muslim philosopher Ya’qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi. This work was commissioned by a powerful patron of…
From Hellenism to Islam
The eight hundred years between the first Roman conquests and the conquest of Islam saw a rich, constantly shifting blend of languages and writing systems, legal structures, religious practices and beliefs in the Near East. While the different ethnic groups and cultural forms often clashed with each other, adaptation was as much a characteristic of the region as conflict. This volume, emphasizing the inscriptions in many languages from the Near E…
The inscription of Zuhayr, the oldest Islamic inscription (24 AH/AD 644–645), the rise of the Arabic script and the nature of the early Islamic state 1
This article provides an edition, translation and analysis of an inscription dated 24 AH (644 AD) discovered recently in north‐west Saudi Arabia. It is an immensely important find, since it is our earliest dated Arabic inscription; it apparently contains a reference to the caliph ‘Umar I and shows evidence of a fully‐fledged system of diacritical marks. The latter aspect is of great significance for our understanding of the development of the Ara…
Writing the Biography of the Prophet Muhammad
This article looks at the different approaches that medieval and modern, Muslim and Western scholars have adopted when attempting to write on the life of Muhammad. It considers the sources for his life and the different methodologies that have been devised for assessing their authenticity. It examines the degree to which Muhammad and the ingredients of the religion that he started were a part of the Late Antique world that he lived in and the way…

New documentary texts and the early Islamic state
This article is intended as a contribution to the debate on the nature of the early Islamic state (especially 1-70 AH/622-690 AD), as regards both its government and its ideology. It presents and discusses new documentary evidence that sheds light on these subjects and tries to advance a little further the discussion of two questions that have been particularly hotly debated in recent years. These are: whether the Muslims merely continued the adm…
W.J.Bankes and the identification of the Nabataean script
