Mathematics Course Grades and Attitudes in Mathematics for Students Enrolled in Three University Colleges
Correlations between mathematics course grades and scores on the Mathematics Attitudes Scale were analyzed for 56 students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, 52 students in the College of Business and Technology, and 69 students in the College of Education. Significant correlations were found for students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education, with one exception (the Importance of Mathematics for the…
Construct Validity of the Mathematics Attitude Scale
A factor analysis of 273 university students' responses to the Mathematics Attitudes Scale was conducted. Four factors (Motivation and Enjoyment, Freedom of Fear, Importance, and Residual Enjoyment) accounted for 59.5% of the total variance. Of the 24 items, 16 loaded on the first factor which accounted for 40.8% of the total variance. The scale was viewed as more unidimensional than multidimensional for the group examined
Discrete-Trials Drl Behavior in Rats and Monkeys
4 stumptail monkeys and 4 albino rats were trained in a discrete-trials latency-correlated reinforcement (DRL) situation. Phenomena investigated were: (a) acquisition of temporal discriminations, (b) effects of within- S intertrial interval variations, (c) disinhibition of responses by novel extraneous stimuli, (d) effects of reinforcement magnitude, and (e) differential conditioning based upon reinforcement of short vs long latencies. Detailed q…
A Rotary Runway Apparatus
An apparatus consisting of a straight alley encircled by a revolving ring of cubicles was described. This provided a method which was successful in speeding up the administration of discrete trials in simple approach learning of rats and in minimizing between-trial handling of Ss
Spatial Discrimination and Reversal Learning Involving Differential Magnitude of Reinforcement
Three experiments are reported in which choice in the acquisition of spatial discrimination and subsequent reversal learning was based on differential magnitude of reinforcement. Exp. I presented evidence suggesting the operation of an important frustration factor on the smaller-magnitude side in this type of discrimination, and revealed a significant effect of temporal distribution of reinforcement on reversal learning. Exp. II showed that, whil…
