Bo H., Zhang B., Oughton C., Yuan X. and Ma J. China's state energy investment during 1991–2007: investment analysis and policy issues, Regional Studies. This article examines China's state energy investment during 1991–2007 using provincial-level panel data. The analysis shows that China's state energy investment is (1) driven by demand for energy, (2) mostly unrelated to energy efficiency, (3) undertaken with the consideration of reducing negat…

  • Dynamic models of regional innovation: Explorations with British time-series data

Ciaran Driver, Christine Oughton•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2008•References: 6

In this paper, we analyse a new dataset on innovation in the British regions from 1990 to 2006. We interpret these data as representing the rate of growth of investment in innovation which we analyse using a range of estimators. The paper explores the role of macro- and microeconomic determinants of innovation. In addition to standard determinants that help to explain the decline in innovation from the late 1990s, our findings also support the hy…

  • Against the New Economic Imperialism: Some Reflections

Open Access•Jonathan Michie, Christine Oughton et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2002•Cited by: 2

Classical political economy recognised that what needed analysing, explaining, and acting on was an economic system inextricably linked to the wider political and social systems. Smith and Ricardo, as well as Marx, saw class and the distribution of income as key. Neoclassical economics replaced these social and collective categories with the individual consumer and the marginal product of labour as the fundamental analytical categories-the "polit…

Open Access•Christine Oughton, Geoff Whittam•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•1997•Cited by: 6

This paper examines the nature of economies of scale in the small firm sector and aims to provide new insight into the economic efficiency of small firm industrial districts. The theoretical analysis identifies the role played by collective external economies of scale that are realised through cooperation over input activities. Using game theory it is shown that cooperation can emerge both as a result of rational profit maximising behaviour and a…

  • Competitiveness Policy in the 1990s

    Open Access•Christine Oughton•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 12

In recent years there has been considerable debate about competitiveness and the nature and direction of industrial and trade policy in the United Kingdom (UK), the European Union (EU) and the United States (US). The term 'competitiveness' appears to have aroused considerable controversy. On the one hand, the word has become a kind of umbrella term for a wide‐ranging set of industrial and trade policies in the 1990s. On the other hand, the term e…
