Interpretations of political and economic organization in ethnographic accounts often depend on assumptions about or estimates of the relation between a population and the area it inhabits and/or exploits. While some attention has been given to factors contributing to the unreliability of demographic data in anthropology, less has been directed to the possible unreliability of information on land area. The purpose of this paper is to present an i…

This paper suggests that biological factors ought to be considered in attempting to explain distributions of theism and atheism across populations. In advancing our argument, we consider two recent efforts to explain atheism. The first, entered by William S. Bainbridge, is in the tradition of sociological theorizing. The second, proffered by Justin L. Barrett, is an example of theorizing within the framework of the recently developed cognitive sc…

In 1918, the United States Army carried out a program to develop unmanned, wind-driven balloons as bomb-carrying attack vehicles. The objective was to blanket all of Germany with incendiary bombs and canisters of lethal gas by launching bombers in enormous numbers from bases in France where prevailing winds would carry them eastward. The program succeeded, and preparations for the balloon bomber offensive were under way when the armistice interve…

RAND research on space technology continued, for the next two decades, to emphasize the primacy of photoreconnaissance and the communication to earth of remotely sensed …

Technology and the Process of Scientific Discovery: The Case of Cosmic Rays CHARLES A. ZIEGLER In 1909 ballooning, a technology that had remained virtually unchanged since the 1780s, began to play the role of midwife in the birth of a new branch of science, cosmic-ray physics. This role has not been fully explicated in histories of either scientific ballooning or early cosmic-ray research.1 In describing the nexus between ballooning and cosmic ra…

    Open Access•Charles Ziegler, Charles A Ziegler•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1988•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Events that led to the successful identification by the US of the 1949 test of a Russian atomic bomb are analyzed in terms of three decisions that involved, respectively, the management, development and deployment of the monitoring system that detected the Russian test. Analysis of these decisions focuses on the way public and `insider' beliefs about atomic bombs influenced the decision-making process, and on how technical and organizational fact…
