  • Continued T12 transmission and shared antibiotic resistance during 2018–2023 Vibrio cholerae outbreaks in Cameroon

Open Access•Sen Claudine Henriette Ngomtcho, Blaise Mboringong Akenji et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Seventh pandemic Vibrio cholerae was first identified in Cameroon in 1971, causing several sporadic disease clusters with few cases. More recent years have seen larger cholera outbreaks, but the mechanism behind these periodic outbreaks is poorly understood, and it is unclear the degree to which antibiotic resistant strains contribute to disease burden and spread. We used whole genome sequencing to characterize 13 V. cholerae isolates from the 20…

  • Trends of cholera epidemics and associated mortality factors in Cameroon

Open Access•Akenji Blaise Mboringong, Sen Claudine Henriette Ngomtcho et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Cholera outbreaks occurred in eight out of the ten administrative regions in Cameroon during the study period and mortality appeared to be driven by multiple factors notably severe dehydration at time of consultation, advanced age, male sex and the dry season. The high caseloads and case-fatality rates reiterate the need for further strengthening of existing cholera surveillance and outbreak response mechanisms

  • Occurrence of Virulence Genes Associated with Human Pathogenic Vibrios Isolated from Two Commercial Dusky Kob (Argyrosmus japonicus) Farms and Kareiga Estuary in the Eastern Cape Province, South Afric…

Open Access•Justine Fri, Roland N Ndip et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Background : Seafood-borne Vibrio infections, often linked to contaminated seafood and water, are of increasing global public health concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of human pathogenic vibrios and their associated virulence genes isolated from fish and water samples from 2 commercial dusky kob farms and Kareiga estuary, South Africa. Methods : A total of 200 samples including dusky kob fish ( n = 120) and seawater ( …

  • Polyphenolic Content and in Vitro Antioxidant Evaluation of the Stem Bark Extract of Peltophorum Africanum Sond (Fabaceae)

Open Access•Benjamin I Okeleye, Vuyokazi Nongogo et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2014

Background: Peltophorum africanum has been traditionally used to relief stress induced diseases. The study was aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activities of ethyl acetate extract. Material and methods: The in vitro antioxidant activities of Peltophorum africanum stem bark extract was examined in this study by means of +radical scavenging and ferric reducing power analysis using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2, 2`-azino-bis (3-ethylbenz…

  • Foliar micro-morphology of Gasteria bicolour haw. (Asphodelaceae) from South Africa

Open Access•WM Otang, DS Grierson et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2014

BACKGROUND: The succulent genus, Gasteria, which comprises 16 species, is endemic to South Africa and has its main centre of distribution in the Savanna Region of the Eastern Cape. Whereas G. bicolor has been investigated phyto-chemically and pharmacologically, not much data concerning the anatomical and micro-morphological features can be found in literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was undertaken, using light and scanning electron mic…

  • Occurrence of Virulence Genes Associated with Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli Isolated from Raw Cow’s Milk from Two Commercial Dairy Farms in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Open Access•Lesley-Anne Caine, Uchechukwu U Nwodo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Escherichia coli remains a public health concern worldwide as an organism that causes diarrhea and its reservoir in raw milk may play an important role in the survival and transport of pathogenic strains. Diarrheagenic E. coli strains are diverse food-borne pathogens and causes diarrhea with varying virulence in humans. We investigated the prevalence of pathogenic E. coli in raw milk from two commercial dairy farms. Four hundred raw milk samples,…

  • Foodborne Pathogens Recovered from Ready-to-Eat Foods from Roadside Cafeterias and Retail Outlets in Alice, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Open Access•Mirriam Ethel Nyenje, Collins E Odjadjare et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

This study assessed the microbiological quality of various ready-to-eat foods sold in Alice, South Africa. Microbiological analysis was conducted on 252 samples which included vegetables, potatoes, rice, pies, beef and chicken stew. The isolates were identified using biochemical tests and the API 20E, API 20NE and API Listeria kits; results were analyzed using the one-way-ANOVA test. Bacterial growth was present in all the food types tested; high…

  • Molecular Detection and Drug Resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex from Cattle at a Dairy Farm in the Nkonkobe Region of South Africa

Open Access•Blessing Silaigwana, Ezekiel Green et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) causes tuberculosis (TB) in humans and animals. We investigated the presence of MTBC in cattle milk and its drug resistance using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Two hundred samples (100 mL each) were obtained from a dairy farm in the Nkonkobe region of South Africa. The samples were processed using the modified Petroff method. DNA was isolated using a Zymo Bacterial DNA kit and amplified using Seeplex(®…

  • Current Status of Antibiograms of Listeria ivanovii and Enterobacter cloacae Isolated from Ready-To-Eat Foods in Alice, South Africa

Open Access•Mirriam Ethel Nyenje, Nicoline F Tanih et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

This study assessed the antimicrobial susceptibility of 51 Listeria ivanovii and 33 Enterobacter cloacae strains isolated from various ready-to-eat foods sold in Alice, South Africa. Isolates were identified using standard microbiological tests and further confirmed using API 20E and API Listeria kits. The disc diffusion technique was used to screen for antimicrobial susceptibility against 15 antimicrobials; minimum inhibitory concentration of fi…

Theresa Nkuo‐Akenji, Armand Nkwesheu et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2007

The study investigates the cognitive effect of knowledge and protective practices on the prevalence of HIV and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among female students of the University of Buea, Cameroon. A cross-sectional study involving the analysis of a questionnaire completed by 522 female students and the voluntary testing of 108 sexually active females for HIV, syphilis, Chlamydia and gonorrhoea was carried out. Knowledge of the pr…
