  • Forms of Mobility in the Southern Tarim Basin in the 7th to 10th Centuries

    Open Access•Tomas Larsen Høisæter•ARTICLE•Medieval Worlds•2024

The written records excavated from sites in the southern Tarim Basin in modern Xinjiang, China, bear witness to a wide range of actors moving for an equally varied range of reasons. Envoys and emissaries moved between the kingdoms and empires, bearing gifts and news between the royal courts. Buddhist monks traversed the same routes on journeys of pilgrimage, while merchants of many different backgrounds carried their commodities between the diffe…

  • Islands in a sea of sand: The role of Tarim Basin polities in global trade during late antiquity

    Open Access•Tomas Larsen Høisæter•ARTICLE•Journal of Global History•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • Trade, Buddhism, and the Kushan Connection: Exchange across the Pamir Knot and the Making of the Silk Roads, 2nd Century bce to 5th Century CE

Tomas Larsen Høisæter, Tomas Larson Høisæter•CHAPTER•2023

The history of contact and exchange across the mountain ranges radiating out from the Pamir knot, separating the three regions of Central Asia, Inner Asia, and Northwestern India, can be traced far back into prehistory, seen in the movements of languages, crops, and animals. From around the 2nd century bce onward, however, these connections steadily grew in intensity. New political connections were drawn across the mountains by the rise of the Ku…

    Open Access•Tomas Larsen Høisæter•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 27

The Silk Road trade network was arguably the most important network of global exchange and interaction prior to the fifteenth century. On the question of how and when it developed, scholars have focused mainly on the role of either the empires dominating the two ends of the trade network or the nomadic empires on the Eurasian steppe. The sedentary people of Central Asia have, however, mostly been neglected. This article traces the development of …
