Science as a philosophical basis for economic ethics
Towards a Personal Knowledge of Economic History: Reflections on Our Intellectual Heritage from the Polanyi Brothers
Our intellectual heritage from the Polanyi Brother: Michael, the scientist-philosopher, and karl, the economic historian, is explicated. Michael Polanyi's Post-critical philosophy of personal Knowledge is explained and analyzed. Michael Polanyi applied his philosophy to develop a powerful historical epistemology and methodology. The classic economic history. The Great Transformation, by Karl Polanyi is analyzed and interpreted as a prototypical e…
John Maynard Keynes and Alvin Hansen: Contrasting methodologies and policies for social economics
Adam Smith on colonies: An analytical and historical interpretation
It is our conclusion that Adam Smith advocated and justified policies of anticolonialism and antiprotectionism. Smith was opposed to the theory and policy of mercantilism, which involved an emphasis on the imperialistic exploitation of colonies as a method of accumulating the precious metals within the boundaries of mercantilistic nations. Smith led British public opinion into a period when little-Englandism replaced colonialism and free trade re…
The significance of Michael Polanyi's post-critical philosophy for institutional and social economics
The post-critical philosophy of Michael Polanyi offers structure and insights for institutional and social economics. The authors argue that his epistemology validates and authenticates the empirical, inductive and historical methods of these branches of economics. Moreover, it can increase their relevance
Pragmatism, Instrumental Value Theory and Social Economics: Comment
Mark Lutz has written a very interesting and extremely provocative article. [Lutz, 1985] It presents significant research on a topic of over? riding importance. It is my respectful but firm conviction, however, that Lutz's argument is based on at least four basic fallacies. First, he fallaciously presumes that pragmatism originated with William James [Lutz, 1985, p. 141] when, in fact, Charles Sanders Peirce created this philosophy. Lutz's second…

The Metaphysical Preconceptions of the Economic Science ∗
Only a minority of professional economists recognize the existence of the philosophical preconceptions of the economic science; and even this minority overwhelmingly reject the metaphysical nature of what? ever preconceptions they recognize. Therefore, the very title of this paper identifies the paper as unusual and its author as heterodox. The purpose of this paper is to argue that such has not always been the case, and that it should not be the…
