  • Introduction

    Open Access•Dany Nobus•ARTICLE•Psychoanalysis and History•2024

Following the publication of a first instalment of the 39 Work Books of M. Masud R. Khan in November 2022 and the recent donation to the Freud Museum London of the full original correspondence between Khan and Wladimir Granoff, and between Khan and Victor Smirnoff, this essay serves the dual purpose of ensuring that Khan’s memory is being kept alive and informing its readership of the newly available archival documents. It briefly retraces the hi…

  • Responses to ‘Anxiety in the Eyes’

    Open Access•Raluca Soreanu, Dany Nobus•ARTICLE•Psychoanalysis and History•2023

The word 'Augenangst', which James Strachey has rendered inconsistently into English as 'fears about the eye', 'anxiety about the eyes', and 'anxiety about eyes', is not exactly a hapax legomenon in Freud's oeuvre, yet it is fair to say that it is an occasionalism, because it only appears in the 1919 essay 'The "Uncanny"' and more specifically in the context of Freud's analysis of E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story 'Der Sandmann", which was original…

  • « Votre popularité parmi nous est immense »

    Dany Nobus•ARTICLE•Topique•2023

  • The Dialectic of Blasphemy

    Dany Nobus•ARTICLE•American imago•2022

Drawing on a table talk by Martin Luther, this essay first presents a new taxonomy of blasphemy, in which instances of injurious speech are distributed along four fundamental axes, which are designated as ‘quality’, ‘source’, ‘judgement’ and ‘response’. This elementary taxonomy is then refined via a re-reading of the way in which blasphemy occurs in Freud’s case-study of the Rat Man, which generates an additional axis, notably that of the ‘object…

  • La dialectique du blasphème

    Dany Nobus, DM Nobus•ARTICLE•Topique•2021

  • Arresting Masculinity

    Open Access•Dany Nobus•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2020

This paper examines how the signifier of ‘toxic masculinity’ operates in the contemporary psycho-social landscape of embodied power relations. It is argued that toxic masculinity is a symbolic response to the deep sense of anger people experience owing to the persistent disturbance of reason that characterizes the radically incongruous Thirdspace in which we live. To those who feel disoriented and lost, toxic masculinity is both an imagined cause…

  • The madness of Princess Alice

    Open Access•Dany Nobus•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2020

During the winter of 1930, Princess Alice of Battenberg was admitted to Kurhaus Schloß Tegel, where she was diagnosed with schizophrenic paranoia. When Freud was consulted about her case by Ernst Simmel, the Sanatorium’s Director, he recommended that the patient’s ovaries be exposed to high-intensity X-rays. Freud’s suggestion was not based on any psychoanalytic treatment principles, but rooted in a rejuvenation technique to which Freud himself h…

    Dany Nobus•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•2006

Ever since I started researching the life and works of Theodor Reik, I have rarely been able to talk about my project to fellow scholars, academic colleagues and intellectual friends without having to correct basic misunderstandings and justify the relevance of my object (and subject) of study. The most common misperception I have encountered in conversations with people on both sides of the Atlantic is nothing less than a case of mistaken identi…
